Urgent Warning: Complex Scam Targets Coinbase Users with Data Breach

Date:

  1. A Coinbase user shares a harrowing experience of falling victim to a complex crypto scam involving a data breach.
  2. The scam began with a text message notifying the user of a changed 2FA, followed by multiple calls from individuals posing as Coinbase customer support.
  3. The scammers requested information related to the user’s account, attempted to deceive the user with a verification code email, and threatened to lock the account for lack of cooperation.

In a recent incident that serves as a stark reminder of the dangers lurking in the crypto space, a Coinbase user has shared a disturbing encounter with a highly complex scam. The individual, who wishes to remain anonymous, hopes to raise awareness and prevent others from falling victim to similar fraudulent activities.

The scam began with the user receiving a text message alerting them to a changed two-factor authentication (2FA) on their Coinbase account. Shortly after, the user received multiple calls from individuals claiming to be Coinbase customer support representatives. These scammers, using a San Francisco phone number, posed a series of questions, including inquiries about the user’s travel plans and requests for email and 2FA changes.

Although the user became suspicious, they were unable to record the calls and provide concrete evidence. The scammers assured the user that they had canceled the unauthorized changes and sent a text to verify the cancellation. They then directed the user to the supposed “security” team to avoid a 48-hour account suspension.

To further deceive the user, the scammers possessed personal details such as the user’s name, email address, and location. They sent an email from [email protected], complete with a “verification code” as part of their ruse. Sensing that something was amiss, the user declined further assistance, changed their password and 2FA immediately, and became increasingly suspicious of the scam.

The scammers, realizing their deception had been exposed, resorted to intimidation and threatened to lock the user’s account for seven days unless the provided verification code was shared. When the user refused, the scammers abruptly ended the call in frustration.

Upon thorough reflection, the user discovered that the verification code sent by the scammers was, in fact, their actual 2FA code. The scammers, using their own email address, attempted to gain access to the user’s account during the phone conversation.

The attached evidence, comprising texts, phone call logs, and email correspondence, serves as a chilling reminder of the lengths scammers will go to exploit unsuspecting crypto users. This incident highlights the urgent need for heightened vigilance and proactive measures to safeguard one’s digital assets.

The user, fortunate enough to recognize the scam in progress, promptly changed their account credentials and thwarted the scammers’ attempts. However, it is crucial to acknowledge that many individuals, unaware of the intricacies of such scams, could easily fall victim to their tactics, resulting in unauthorized access to and potential loss of funds.

This cautionary tale underscores the importance of maintaining a strong security posture, adhering to best practices, and being skeptical of unsolicited communication. Users must exercise caution when receiving unexpected messages, calls, or emails related to their crypto accounts, and promptly report any suspicious activity to the relevant platform.
