Upset city, both G2 and Astralis missed qualification to the IEM Rio Major

Date:

After a day of unexpected upsets at the IEM Rio Major RMR A qualifier tournament, the once “best team in the world” aka Danish dynasty Astralis has hit rock bottom, having failed to qualify for a Major for the first time in history as an organization after losing to forZe after just 2 maps.

Astralis’ Major attendance streak was already in doubt after map one Mirage, as they lost after achieving a 13-4 lead to a forZe comeback due to a horrendous T side half. Xyp9x and gla1ve combined for three T side kills while forZe put up a great defense, allowing only two bomb plants over the final rounds. Shalfey was the MVP for forZe with 26 kills and 14 deaths in a 16-14 comeback forZe win.

ForZe looked confident to sweep Astralis on second map Nuke, starting out with a rapid 6-1 lead. But Astralis showed up with a solid T sided half, bouncing back before halftime to give themselves momentum going into the second half. Astralis managed to take the lead on the CT half, but they couldn’t hold it for long against forZe’s rushing power. Both Zorte and Norwi showcased their talent for forZe late in the second map, helping the team finish the match with a 16-13 scoreline.

This showing continues the downward trend that Astralis has experienced at Majors since the end of 2021. The three time Major winners ended 1-3 in the Legends Stage at PGL Stockholm, falling in the Challengers Stage at Antwerp, and now missing the Major for the first time in organizational history.

As for G2, one of the biggest CS GO teams in the world, has also been eliminated from Europe Regional Major Ranking (RMR) A qualifier by GamerLegion. With this defeat, G2 will not be able to qualify for the IEM Rio Major, the second Valve sponsored event of 2022.

The EU juggernaut of captain Nikola “NiKo” Kovač, Nemanja “huNter-” Kovač, and Ilya “m0NESY” Osipov leave the Europe RMR A under the 1-3 class, having beat only ECSTATIC and lost to both Cloud 9 and 1WIN in addition to now GamerLegion. G2 started the series with a confident 16-3 victory on Vertigo and were then absolutely demolished 16-4 on second map Mirage.

This defeat left a bad taste for G2 Esports, who finished the group stage of the ESL Pro League season 16, the tournament right before Europe RMR B, with an undefeated scoreline, and then fell in the semifinals to grand champions of the competition Vitality.

G2 signed the Australian rifler Justin “jks” Savage and the in-game leader Rasmus “HooXi” Nielsen for the second half of the season after experiencing underwhelming results with former IGL Aleksi “Aleksib” Virolainen, who actually qualified with NiP to the IEM Rio Major.
