UOB Online Banking Suffers Disruptions on Saturday, Back Up By Midday by Fintech News Singapore November 6, 2023

The United Overseas Bank (UOB) experienced sporadic disruptions with its online banking platforms last Saturday (4 November), according to a report by The Business Times.

Users began reporting difficulties in accessing the bank’s mobile and internet banking services around midday, with many voicing their concerns on the bank’s Facebook page about being unable to sign into the mobile app due to a network connection error.

The Business Times conducted its own tests, confirming that not only did the app have an extended login time, but any attempt to utilise features within the app resulted in the same network error message.

However, by 12:42 p.m., normal service seemed to have resumed, with users regaining access to UOB’s digital banking facilities.

The day before UOB’s issues, Singapore’s electronic payment service provider NETS had informed the public of intermittent connectivity problems affecting its Nets QR and eNets services.

UOB’s quick recovery is set against the backdrop of DBS’ more protracted service disruptions this year which resulted in the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) to impose a six-month moratorium on the bank regarding non-critical IT changes, new business ventures and the reduction of the size of its branch and ATM networks.

MAS requires all banks to have in place back-up data centres and systems and to test them periodically to ensure that critical systems and services can be restored within 4 hours following an outage.
