Within the first week of the Russia-Ukraine war, the government of Ukraine reached out to the crypto community on social media to start asking for crypto donations to support its civilians and troops. Now, Ukraine accepts USDT, ETH, and Bitcoin donations. As Russia threatens to take over Ukraine’s capital city of Kyiv, the government of Ukraine asked for help from multiple international organizations to overpower the threat. However, considering time is the essence, the official Twitter account for Ukraine extended the call on Crypto Twitter.

The Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine Mykhailo Fedorov shared three crypto wallet addresses and urged the community to donate and help Ukraine fight off Russian troops. While the BTC and ETH addresses remain the same, the USDT wallet of Fedorov is TRC20 based. Some prominent crypto entrepreneurs including ETH co-founder Vitalik Buterin suspected that the accounts requesting crypto were hacked but the American diplomat Tomicah Tilleman confirmed the legitimacy from the Ukrainian ambassador Olexander Scherba.

As a direct result of the war, Ukrainian civilians reported the loss of access to their fiat savings and credit cards. The UN reported that over 150,000 people were displaced from Ukraine and while the confusion prevailed about the usage of crypto donations, Buterin shared a decentralized autonomous organization initiative that focuses solely on Ukrainian citizens. UkraineDAO is led by Pussy Riot’s Nadya Tolokonnikova and launched the release of a 1/1 NFT of the Ukrainian flag to raise funds for the Ukrainian civilian organizations for all those suffering from the war with Russia.

The Ukraine Ministry received plenty of requests from foreigners for crypto donations. Although unconfirmed, it is believed that the proceedings to the addresses shared by the Ukrainian government will be used by the government directly while the DAO proceedings will be redirected towards citizen welfare via an NGO. As soon as the Russia-Ukraine war broke out, prominent crypto entrepreneurs took action to help the people in Ukraine. FTX CEO Sam Bankman Fried was one of the first to offer monetary support for all FTX traders from Ukraine.
