Franklin is a young receiver who improved in all three years at Oregon. Now he is headed to the 2024 NFL Draft.
As a four-star recruit out of California, Franklin signed with Oregon in the class of 2021. He saw the field as a true freshman, registering 18 catches for 209 yards and two touchdowns. His role increased in 2022. He hauled in 61 passes for 891 yards and nine touchdowns. Franklin helped the Ducks win 10 games including the Holiday Bowl. For the 2023 season, Franklin had his best season with 81 catches for 1,383 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns, which led the Ducks to win 12 games.
Following the season, Franklin declared for the 2024 NFL Draft. He is currently projected to be a first or second-round pick.
Troy Franklin Strengths
Franklin has an NFL frame that he can add to as he grows. He stands at 6-foot-3, giving him solid height for the position. His height makes it tough for shorter NFL defensive backs to match up with him. It also gives him a big catch radius, which he can use to win 50/50 balls downfield or in the red zone.
He is a good deep threat, for a few reasons. Franklin has good speed, which he uses to naturally separate from defensive backs who can’t match his stride length. Once he gets past the defense, Franklin can make contested catches and uses his body well to win. He can keep defenses honest with his ability to stretch the field vertically. Franklin draws a lot of pass interference calls down the field.
His route running is solid in a couple of different ways. He shows good awareness of where zone coverage is and sits down in between zones to give the quarterback an open target. Franklin has solid releases to beat defenders at the line of scrimmage. He can beat man coverage with his speed.
Troy Franklin Weaknesses
Franklin will need to add strength to work well in the NFL. He will need it to beat physical coverage and press. Franklin is still a very young receiver, so he has time to fill out his frame, but he has a lot of work to do in this area to look the part of a professional receiver.
While he is a solid route-runner, there are times when he doesn’t get in and out of his breaks as quickly as he needs to. His center of gravity is high, which makes it tough for him to change direction at times. He also didn’t run the most diverse route tree at Oregon.
His blocking leaves a lot to be desired. A lot of this comes from his lack of strength, but he needs to show a better effort to improve in that area. He can sustain blocks longer to help spring more big plays for his offense. This isn’t a huge deal in some offenses, but improving as a blocker would make him a more well-rounded player.
