Top 25 College Football Quarterbacks

Date:

The college football season is approaching. There is always debate over ranking the best players in the sport. Here are the top 25 college football quarterbacks heading into the 2022 season.

Note: While projection of what a player can be is considered, most rankings are from what has been seen on the field. These are not NFL Draft rankings, but rather focus on the best players in college football.

Top College Football Quarterbacks

25-21

25. Tanner Mordecai, Wisconsin Badgers

After starting his career at Oklahoma, Mordecai transferred to SMU to get more playing time. He passed for 3,628 yards, 39 touchdowns and 12 interceptions on 67.8 percent completion in 2021. Last season, Mordecai had 3,524 passing yards, 33 touchdowns and 11 interceptions on 65 percent completion. This offseason he transferred to Wisconsin where he’ll now get a chance to prove himself against the better competition in the Big Ten.

24. Cameron Ward, Washington State Cougars

As one of the best quarterbacks at the FCS-level, Ward left Incarnate Word to join Washington State last season. He passed for 3,232 yards, 23 touchdowns and nine interceptions on 64.4 percent completion. After adjusting to the jump in competition level in 2022, 2023 could be even better for Ward.

23. Joe Milton, Tennessee Volunteers

Milton started his career at Michigan, then transferred to Tennessee. Hendon Hooker beat him out for the job during the 2021 season, but Milton remained patient. Last season when Hooker went down with an injury, Milton filled in well with 971 passing yards, 10 touchdowns and 0 interceptions on 64.6 percent completion. In the past, Milton has been erratic with his throws at times, but this year could be more consistent.

22. Michael Pratt, Tulane Green Wave

Last season was a dream for Tulane, as they won the Sugar Bowl. Pratt did his part with 3,009 passing yards, 27 touchdowns and five interceptions on 63.6 percent completion. With 7,196 career passing yards, Pratt has enough career achievement to be noted along with his good 2022 season.

21. Cade Klubnik, Clemson Tigers

After D.J. Uiagalelei started the 2022 season as the starter, Klubnik eventually took the job. His natural talent ranks higher than this, but he just doesn’t have a lot of experience yet. He passed for 697 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions on 61 percent completion. A good season could see him rise as high as the top 10 for next season.

20-16

20. Will Rogers, Mississippi State Bulldogs

Rogers had a great 2021 season when he passed for 4,739 yards, 36 touchdowns and nine interceptions on 68 percent completion. This past season wasn’t quite as good for Rogers, but still solid with 3,974 passing yards, 35 touchdowns and eight interceptions on 68 percent completion.

19. Austin Reed, Western Kentucky Hilltoppers

It wouldn’t be a shock to see Reed lead the FBS in passing yards this season. He was a starter for Western Kentucky last season and before played in Division II. Reed operated the great passing attack last year, notching 4,746 passing yards, 40 touchdowns and 11 interceptions on 64.5 percent completion.

18. Taulia Tagovailoa, Maryland Terrapins

Tagovailoa has had two good seasons at Maryland following his transfer from Alabama. He has passed for 7,979 yards, 52 touchdowns and 26 interceptions on 67.5 percent completion in his career. While the 2021 season was better than the 2022 season, Tagovailoa still played solidly enough to make the list.

17. Spencer Rattler, South Carolina Gamecocks

It is hard to place Rattler on any list because of his inconsistency. When he is playing well, there aren’t many better quarterbacks in the country, but he hasn’t shown that from game to game or even year to year. He has 7,621 passing yards, 58 touchdowns and 24 interceptions on 68.4 percent completion. A rise in consistency this year could have South Carolina improving this season.

16. Dillon Gabriel, Oklahoma Sooners

After a few productive years at UCF, Gabriel transferred to Oklahoma last season. As a Sooner, Gabriel passed for 3,168 yards, 25 touchdowns and six interceptions on 62.7 percent completion. While the offense wasn’t operating at an efficient level, Gabriel did his part.

15-11

15. Cameron Rising, Utah Utes

Rising has led the Utes to two straight Rose Bowl appearances and has them poised for another good season. In 2022, he passed for 3,034 yards, 26 touchdowns and eight interceptions on 64.7 percent completion, which was his best season yet.

14. Devin Leary, Kentucky Wildcats

Due to injury and offensive playcalling, Leary did not have a great 2022 season, but in 2021 he was among the best in the country. That year he had 3,433 passing yards, 35 touchdowns and five interceptions on 65.7 percent completion. If he can regain his form, Kentucky’s offense will be much improved in 2022.

13. Quinn Ewers, Texas Longhorns

Ewers is another tournament that would rank higher on this list if it were solely based on natural talent. The problem is that last year he was injured in the Alabama game and only played 10 games, some of which couldn’t have felt great to play in. He still passed for 2,177 yards, 15 touchdowns and six interceptions on 58.1 percent completion.

12. Jalon Daniels, Kansas Jayhawks

The Kansas Jayhawks went to a bowl game last season and the man who led them there is number 12 on the list. He passed for 2,014 yards, 18 touchdowns and four interceptions on 66.2 percent completion in nine games. Daniels also adds the ability to run the football, as he finished with 425 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on the ground.

11. Grayson McCall, Coastal Carolina Chanticleers

McCall has been a model of consistency, as he puts up good numbers and protects the football. Last season, he passed for 2,700 yards, 24 touchdowns and two interceptions on 69.7 percent completion. He also finished 2022 with 195 rushing yards and six touchdowns.

10-6

10. Frank Harris, UTSA Roadrunners

Harris has improved every season he has been under center for the Roadrunners. He has passed for 9,356 yards, 74 touchdowns and 23 interceptions on 67.4 percent completion. For the 2022 season, Harris lit up the scoreboard with 4,063 passing yards, 32 touchdowns and nine interceptions on 69.6 percent completion.

9. J.J. McCarthy, Michigan Wolverines

McCarthy played sparingly in 2021 before winning the job in 2022 after the first few games. He passed for 2,719 yards, 22 touchdowns and five interceptions on 64.6 percent completion. His play helped Michigan make the CFP for the second straight year, but he’ll need to make more downfield throws this time around.

8. Jayden Daniels, LSU Tigers

Daniels started his career at Arizona State before transferring to LSU last season. Although he had some success with the Sun Devils, he was much more effective and consistent for the Tigers. He passed for 2,913 yards, 17 touchdowns and three interceptions on 68.6 percent completion. Daniels also rushed for 885 yards and 11 touchdowns.

7. K.J. Jefferson, Arkansas Razorbacks

In 2021, Jefferson played well to put himself on the map. He passed for 2,676 yards, 21 touchdowns and four interceptions on 67.3 percent completion. For the 2022 season, he battled injuries, but still passed for 2,636 yards, 24 touchdowns and five interceptions on 68 percent completion. He also rushed for 640 yards and nine touchdowns. A healthy Jefferson is the key for Arkansas to improve this season.

6. Jordan Travis, Florida State Seminoles

Both Travis and the entire Seminoles program took a huge step forward in 2022. Florida State won 10 games while Travis passed for 3,214 yards, 24 touchdowns and five interceptions on 64 percent completion. He also rushed for 417 yards and seven touchdowns. The question now is whether Travis and the Seminoles can improve again.

5-1

5. Sam Hartman, Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Hartman is the FBS active leader in passing yards. Over his career, he has thrown for 12,967 yards, 110 touchdowns and 41 interceptions on 59.1 percent completion. After five seasons at Wake Forest, he is now challenging himself at Notre Dame, where he is expected to fix a lackluster passing attack.

4. Bo Nix, Oregon Ducks

Nix’s inconsistencies plagued him at Auburn. He transferred to Oregon in 2022 and really improved his game. He passed for 3,593 yards, 29 touchdowns and seven interceptions on 71.9 percent completion. Nix also rushed for 510 yards and 14 touchdowns. Another big season could be incoming for Nix, which is not something many would expect a few years ago.

3. Michael Penix, Washington Huskies

Penix was good during his four seasons at Indiana, but couldn’t stay healthy. A transfer to Washington in 2022 was a fresh start. He padded the stat sheet with 4,641 passing yards, 31 touchdowns and eight interceptions on 65.3 percent completion. Penix has put himself in a position to be a Heisman frontrunner this year.

2. Drake Maye, UNC Tar Heels

It was Maye’s first season as a starter and he impressed. He passed for 4,321 yards, 38 touchdowns and seven interceptions on 66.2 percent completion. Maye wasn’t able to win a lot of games due to some bad play by UNC’s defense, but he has set the offense up well and himself up to be a high draft pick.

1. Caleb Williams, USC Trojans

There is no other spot for Williams on this list than the top. He is coming off a Heisman Trophy-winning season where he passed for 4,537 yards, 42 touchdowns and five interceptions on 66.6 percent completion. He also rushed for 10 touchdowns. Williams is attempting to become the second player in history to win two Heisman Trophies during his career.

Notable Quarterbacks Outside the Top 25

Brennan Armstrong, NC State Wolfpack

After a strong season at Virginia in 2021, things didn’t go well with a new coaching staff. A new home at NC State could provide a big opportunity for improvement.

Drew Allar, Penn State Nittany Lions

Allar showed some flashes of his potential last season when he filled in for Sean Clifford last season. He was a highly-touted recruit who could find himself high on this list by season’s end.

Jaxson Dart, Ole Miss Rebels

Dart started his career at USC then joined Ole Miss last season. He has plenty of talent, but has to make more big-time throws to make the offense more balanced.

Jayden De Laura, Arizona Wildcats

At Washington State, he won Pac-12 Offensive Freshman of the year. Last year at Arizona, De Laura helped rejuvenate the offense with 3,685 yards. 25 touchdowns and 13 interceptions on 62.5 percent completion.

Seth Henigan, Memphis Tigers

He passed for 3,558 yards, 22 touchdowns and eight interceptions in 2022 for his best season yet. The 2023 season could be Henigan’s third-straight year of 3,000 yards in a season.

Will Howard, Kansas State Wildcats

Howard split duties with Adrian Martinez last season and helped Kansas State win the Big 12 Championship. He passed for 1,633 yards, 15 touchdowns and four interceptions on 59.8 percent completion.

Phil Jurkovec, Boston College Eagles

Jurkovec has had an injury-ridden career with stops at Notre Dame, Boston College and now Pittsburgh. In his last healthy season, he passed for 2,558 yards, 17 touchdowns and five interceptions on 59.5 completion.

Riley Leonard, Duke Blue Devils

Duke and Leonard had great seasons for new coach Mike Elko. Leonard passed for nearly 3,000 yards with 20 touchdowns and six interceptions.

Jalen Milroe, Alabama Crimson Tide

Milroe filled in for Bryce Young when he went down with injury last season. He had some nice moments, but also some bad ones. The combination of his arm and his legs should help him be successful.

Blake Shapen, Baylor Bears

Shapen passed for 2,790 yards, 18 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in his fist full year as Baylor’s starter. He’ll need to play a little better to make the top 25.

Jeff Sims, Nebraska Cornhuskers

Sims has battled injuries, but also wasn’t in the greatest situation at Georgia Tech. He has the ability to use his arm and his legs, but needs to play better to make a top 25 list.

D.J. Uiagalelei, Clemson Tigers

Uiagalelei was replaced by Cade Klubnik and decided to transfer to Oregon State. He wasn’t the most effective over the last two seasons, but a fresh start might be exactly what he needs to play better.

Connor Wiegman, Texas A&M Aggies

Wiegman passed for 896 yards, eight touchdowns and no interceptions in five games played last season. He will be the key to improving Texas A&M’s offense this season.
