Dogecoin (DOGE), the canine-represented digital asset, is getting a piece of the action in the National Basketball Association.
Billionaire Mark Cuban, who owns the Dallas Mavericks basketball team in the NBA, said the team would accept Dogecoin for tickets and merchandise.
“The Mavericks have decided to accept Dogecoin as payment for Mavs tickets and merchandise for one very important, earth-shattering reason because we can!” Coindesk quoted Cuban as saying in a statement on the Mavs website.
DOGE bark getting louder
Dogecoin, which is currently trading around $0.05 per token, came into circulation in 2013 as a joke based around the well-known internet DOGE meme.
DOGE has since gained popularity though after endorsements from celebrities like rapper Snoop Dogg, Jay Z, and corporate top honchos like Tesla chief executive Elon Musk and Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey. The crypto is up almost 2,000% in just the last year alone.
It’s the second important piece of news for the Shiba Inu cryptocurrency this week. On Tuesday, ATM provider CoinFlip announced DOGE can now be bought using cash across its 1,800-machine network.
Taking Dogecoin ‘possibly forevermore’
“We have chosen to do so because sometimes in business, you have to do things that are fun, engaging, and hopefully generate a lot of PR. So we will take Dogecoin, today, tomorrow, and possibly forevermore,” Cuban said in remarks quoted by GoBankingRates.
It’s not Cuban’s first venture into DOGE. Early last month, he said on Twitter that he had bought some of the cryptos in order for his son to teach him about the digital currency business.
The Mavericks have been accepting Bitcoin (BTC) as a form of payment for game tickets and merchandise for nearly two years. Crypto payments group BitPay processes the transactions. BitPay has handled purchases in BTC for the Mavs since 2019, the statement said.
