Tencent Files Patent to Host Virtual Concerts in Metaverse
Chinese tech giant Tencent has extended its metaverse push by submitting a patent for virtual concerts, according to industry data tracker Qichacha. Tencent Wants to Enter Metaverse Chinese internet firm Tencent has applied for a virtual concerts patent with the Chinese National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA). The abstract shows that the application method includes ‘in the current object’s song practice interface, the presentation of the concert entrance; based on this entrance, receive the concert creation instructions for the target singer, and then create a song simulation concert room; collect the corresponding singing content of the target singer’s song, and play it through the concert room’ which essentially means that the company wants to create or host virtual concerts in the metaverse realm. On December 31 2021, Tencent hosted China’s first-ever virtual concert in the Metaverse on NYE which saw over 1.1 million fans joining the festival. China’s Big Tech Files Metaverse Patent Despite Govt’s Rejection Tencent’s patent application comes at a time, the People’s Bank of China (PBoC) took a strong stance against the Metaverse and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) in November, going even ahead to say that it would track them with Anti-Money Laundering (AML) tools. However, according to the Chinese news outlet The Paper, more than a thousand Chinese companies have already submitted over 16,000 metaverse-related trademark applications including tech titans such as Tencent, ByteDance, NetEase, and Baidu filing for related trademarks.
