Bitcoin NUPL Suggests Bear Market Yet To Hit In Full Swing

On-chain data shows the Bitcoin NUPL metric currently has values that would suggest the bear market is yet to hit in full swing, if the coin is in one. Bitcoin NUPL Value Still Not As Low As Previous Bear Markets As pointed out by an analyst in a CryptoQuant post, the BTC NUPL metric suggests market hasn’t neared a bear market bottom yet. The “net unrealized profile/loss” (or NUPL in short) is an indicator that tells us about the ratio of profit and loss in the Bitcoin market. The metric’s value is calculated by taking the difference between the market cap and the realized cap, and dividing it by the market cap. When the NUPL has a value greater than zero, it means there are more coins in profit than ones in loss at the moment. On the other hand, negative values of the indicator imply that investors are, on average, in a state of loss right now. In the previous bear markets, the indicator’s value has usually fallen off below zero (blue) as a bottom approached. In the lead up to these bearish periods have been the yellow and green phases, but currently the NUPL still looks to be in the yellow zone. This may mean that if Bitcoin has already entered into a bear market, it has still some ways to go before total capitulation and bottom formation. Arthur Hayes Says However, it’s worth noting that there have been instances before where the indicator dropped into the yellow zone after a bull rally, but then jumped back up soon after as the bullish trend continued, indicating a mid-cycle bottom formation instead. The latest example of this was during the mini-bear period of May-July 2021, where the coin bottomed at around $28k and rallied on to a new ATH. BTC Price At the time of writing, Bitcoin’s price floats around $41.4k, up 6% in the past week. Over the last month, the crypto has gained 8% in value. NEC Develops the World’s First Unit Cell Facilitating Scaling Up to a Fully-connected Quantum Annealing Architecture

TOKYO, Mar 17, 2022 - (JCN Newswire) - NEC Corporation (TSE: 6701) has developed the world's first LHZ scheme(1) unit cell facilitating scaling up to a fully-connected architecture using superconducting parametron(2) quantum bits (qubits). NEC has succeeded in demonstrating quantum annealing operations using these qubits, which will enable high accuracy calculations. Via this achievement, NEC has made further progress toward the production of a quantum annealing machine(3), which is a type of quantum computer.

Figure 2: Diagram of the three-dimensional structure technology

Combinational optimization is important for finding solutions to complex social issues. It aims to find the optimal solution from an enormous set of potential choices. In 1999, NEC developed a superconducting qubit for use in gate-type quantum computers. Since then, NEC has applied the technology in the research and development of a quantum annealing machine using superconducting parametron qubits that can solve combinatorial optimization problems at high speed and with great accuracy.

NEC has developed a four qubit unit cell of the LHZ scheme. This enables scaling to multiple fully-connected logical qubits utilizing superconducting parametron and circuit coupling technology. NEC has achieved a world first by successfully solving small-scale combinatorial optimization problems via quantum annealing using this new technology. In another world first, NEC has also developed a three-dimensional structure technology that efficiently connects many LHZ scheme unit cells arranged in a tile pattern with external devices.

By replicating the unit cell in a tile pattern, it is possible to easily create a structure where many qubits are logically connected to each other, whilst maintaining the features of the superconducting parametron that allow it to perform calculations with high accuracy. NEC has made progress toward the realization of a quantum annealing machine that can solve large-scale and complex combinatorial optimization problems at high speed.

NEC is working to develop a quantum annealing machine using superconducting parametrons as a project(4) commissioned by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO). NEC is currently conducting research and development to improve the integration of superconducting parametrons in a fully connected architecture, with the aim of realizing quantum annealing machines by 2023. NEC will use these results as building blocks to further accelerate the development of quantum computers.

(1) LHZ scheme: LHZ is an abbreviation for a technique proposed by Lechner, Hauke and Zoller. As the number of qubits increases, it becomes difficult in hardware to directly connect each qubit to each of the other qubits. To solve this problem, ParityQC proposed with LHZ a transformation that enables fully connected qubits to be obtained using qubits that are physically connected to only their nearest neighbours. A unit cell, composed of four qubits and a central coupling circuit connecting them can be replicated using a tile-like pattern.

(2) Superconducting parametron: A superconducting resonant circuit composed of Josephson junctions and capacitors which oscillates with different phases and can be used as a qubit. The lifetime of the qubit (which determines the upper limit of the time for which high-speed operation is possible) is an order of magnitude longer than that of magnetic flux qubits. It is expected that calculations performed within a fixed time period will have improved accuracy.
(3) Quantum Annealing Machine: A computer that exploits the laws of quantum mechanics to search for the minimum energy state of a cost function. The minimum energy state corresponds to the solution of the combinatorial optimization problem. The smallest unit to be calculated is a qubit. As the number of qubits increases and the connectivity between the qubits increases, larger and more complex combinatorial optimization problems can be solved.

Toyota Develops Storage Module Utilizing Resin High-Pressure Hydrogen Tanks

Toyota City, Japan, Mar 15, 2022 - (JCN Newswire) - Toyota Motor Corporation (Toyota) announced today that it has developed a hydrogen storage module that integrates multiple resin high-pressure hydrogen tanks at 70 MPa for automobiles--already proven in the "Mirai" fuel cell vehicle (FCEV)--and safety devices such as a hydrogen detector and an automatic shut-off switch. Toyota will be exhibiting a conceptual model of this module at the FC Expo (International Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Expo) held at Tokyo Big Sight (Koto-ku, Tokyo) from March 16 to 18.

Illustration of the hydrogen storage module conceptual model

In connection to this module development, Toyota will also continue with verification of transport safety and hydrogen storage quantity utilizing the agile development site of a race, etc. in the same way as last year. This year as well, verification will start with the Super Taikyu Race in Suzuka, to be held from March 19 to 20.

Background of module development

Toyota has been working on initiatives toward realizing a hydrogen-based society, such as the sale of FCEVs and FC systems. As part of this, the 70 MPa resin high-pressure hydrogen tank developed for automobiles is now the subject of numerous requests from those who would like to use it in railways, shipping, and port cargo handling, as well as FC generators. However, using the same tanks in various fields requires meeting different safety standards and adjusting to each environment. For this reason, they are not currently used for a wide range of purposes. The government is working on a range of studies to promote the early adoption of hydrogen while ensuring safety, and Toyota and its business partners are ready to offer cooperation and support. Toyota developed this hydrogen storage module as a way to answer these demands and expand the use of hydrogen.

Initiatives to promote the use of high-pressure hydrogen tanks

Starting last year, Toyota has been carrying out repeated verification testing with its business partners throughout the whole phases of producing, transporting, and using at the Super Taikyu Series venue, a place for agile development that embodies the idea of "making ever-better motorsports-bred cars." This is also connected to the development of this conceptual model. This year too, starting with the Super Taikyu Race in Suzuka (March 19 to 20), Toyota will be working on connecting with new business partners and carrying out verification testing with the idea of expanding hydrogen use even further.

This race will be used to verify the transport of large amounts of hydrogen by an FC truck that will carry resin high-pressure hydrogen tanks for automobiles with large volumes (2 sets of 16-tank packages) filled at 45 MPa.

This verification will be implemented upon the certification of the vessels by the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry, and is an initiative that will also contribute to the studies being carried out by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism for encouraging the use of hydrogen. In keeping pace with studies by the government, Toyota will continue to use opportunities such as the Super Taikyu races to verify its capabilities in utilizing the 70 MPa which is certified only for use in automobiles.

Features of the hydrogen storage module conceptual model

In addition to the three variations of hydrogen capacity based on the resin high-pressure hydrogen tank used in the Mirai, large modules that use tanks with enlarged capacities are also included in the lineup.

Feature 1Storing and transporting hydrogen

The module unit, which packages safety-assured resin hydrogen tanks for use in automobiles, is integrated with various safety devices that automatically monitor operation status to ensure the module is extremely safe. As storing and transporting hydrogen more safely and efficiently can be done through high-capacity hydrogen loads, it is possible to use hydrogen-based energy in a range of locations where hydrogen filling is difficult, such as ports or mountain areas.

Feature 2Using hydrogen

When using hydrogen as a fuel for FC products, in combination with the FC system module released by Toyota in March 2021, allows safe and easy use in a range of fields, including mobility such as trains and ships in addition to trucks and buses, port cargo handling, and FC generators.
