South Korea Overwatch World Cup Fan Events

Date:

With the match on July 1, the South Korean Overwatch World Cup team progresses out of qualifiers. What is even more exciting is the direction of fan events the South Korean Overwatch World Cup team has been putting on this year. No doubt the break in the Overwatch League schedule has helped facilitate these events, but it is a big boost for Korean fans to see these events being put on.

Fan Events

The South Korean Overwatch World Cup team is full of fan-favorite players. For tank it is Hanbin ‘Hanbin’ Choi and Euiseok ‘Fearless’ Lee who were both on the Dallas Fuel last season. DPS is Yeonghan ‘SP9RK1E’ Kim and Jaewon ‘LIP’ Lee, while the supports are Joon ‘Fielder’ Kwon, Hyeonseok ‘ChiYo’ Han, and Sejin ‘Finn’ Oh. Having fans events are great as all these players are spread out on different teams and fans get to interact and see many of their favorites in one place.

More than any other year the South Korean Overwatch World Cup team has been doing events. The most notable one was that Fearless and Sparkle threw the opening pitch for the Kiwoom baseball team. The whole South Korean Overwatch World Cup team was there on the field and enjoyed the game. This was a big event as it stretched beyond the normal esport community and into the more mainstream media.

There was a signing session for the fans at the Midseason Madness on the last day of matches. It was the longest line yet for the after match signings. This was one of the most anticipated signings, where fans were leaving their seats early to start lining up before the Atlanta Reign had even won yet. An hour after the signing had started and there were still many people lined up.

For the team’s last match of qualifying against Team Japan, the South Korean Overwatch World Cup team played the match offline. They were in the WDG arena where fans could come to the arena and watch the match live. After the match the team had a fan event where the MCs facilitated the questions and answers.

Unfortunately during these events, Finn was not able to be present as he was still in America with the San Francisco Shock. That did not take away from the great fan engagement that the South Korean Overwatch World Cup team has had this year. Not only does this help garner attention for the Overwatch World Cup, but as the rest of the matches will be in Anaheim, so many Korean fans won’t be able to cheer for them in person. This gives the opportunity for the Korean fans to interact and show their support.
