Solana (SOL) Labs Work to Balance Network After Mainnet Beta Outage

Date:

  • Solana’s co-founder said the 1.14 network update has raised concerns about maintaining stability during major updates.
  • Anatoly Yakovenko and Solana Labs have released plans to improve network upgrades.
  • The root cause of the mainnet beta outage remains unknown.

The Solana (SOL) Mainnet suffered performance degradation leading the validator community to restart the network on February 25th, 2023.

As a result of the latest in a series of outages, the Solana community started voicing more concerns regarding the stability of the network during the recurring outages.

On March 1st, Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko shared the network’s plans moving forward to improve upgrades and performance by proxy.

According to the co-founder, Solana’s top priority remains “delivering a fast, reliable, and scalable network in order to move toward a better, decentralized web.” He further wrote that the 1.14 network update focused on improvements for speed and scale, and the issues around the upgrade have clarified how maintaining stability during these major updates “remains a challenge.”

At the time of writing, the root cause of the network outage on February 25th remains unknown, as an investigation remains in action to provide the community with more details as they become available.

The published statement has revealed Solana’s plans in motion toward addressing “the balance between reliability and building a scalable and fast network,” as explained by Yakovenko.

Solana’s Plan of Action

Solana core engineers are committed to actioning the necessary changes to ensure reliability doesn’t suffer for the sake of innovation and speed.

As part of the network’s plan to improve network upgrades, the co-founder revealed a detailed plan for moving forward, starting with core developers improving the process for software release rollouts by “bringing in additional external developers and auditors to test and find exploits.”

Developers are also said to continue supporting external core engineers, including the Firedancer team building a second validator client. Core engineers will be working with validators to improve the software release process to break the pattern of previous releases, including the 1.14 network upgrade.

The plan to improve this process would require “regenesis of the testnet image during the first downgrade,” including changing the stake distribution to mirror the mainnet beta.

Furthermore, an adversarial team is being formed comprising nearly one-third of Solana Labs’ core engineering team to help find exploits across the underlying protocols and “provide hardware to run medium to large clusters for adversarial simulation.”

Solana will also be improving the restart process and continuing its focus on stability and adversarial testing.

The co-founder concluded the improvement plan by thanking the community for its “invaluable” input and support toward the network’s vision of a decentralized future.

At the time of writing, the price of SOL had dipped 3.07% over the past 24 hours, recording a plunge of 60.10% over the past three months.

On the Flipside

  • The price of SOL spiked 30% in light of the Helium network migration to Solana.
  • The Solana Ecosystem Call is in the books for March 2nd, wherein the outage and the state of the network is expected to be discussed further.
  • Although NFT sales have been carrying the ecosystem, volumes on Solana marketplaces have dipped across the board over the past 24 hours.

Why You Should Care

Despite this acknowledgement and proactivity from the co-founder, the network outages have prompted the Solana community to question the network’s reliability. This concerned sentiment is reflecting on the price of SOL as well as the NFT activity on Solana marketplaces.
