Solana Releases Developer Ecosystem Report For 2023 | BitPinas

Date:

  • Solana’s developer ecosystem experienced significant growth in 2023, marked by advancements in tooling, developer experience, and programming languages.
  • The network maintained a steady count of 2,500 to 3,000 monthly active developers throughout the year, with an emphasis on potential underestimation due to exclusive consideration of public repositories.
  • The BLOKC’s Solana Ecosystem Call IRL event in Pasig City aims to foster collaboration and learning among Solana builders, featuring James F from Chain Crisis, a Solana-based blockchain game.

To conclude the recent year, blockchain network Solana shared its developer ecosystem report, which demonstrated significant growth in 2023.

Last year, the report highlighted that the Solana developer ecosystem had thrived, with major advancements in tooling, developer experience, and programming languages.

Developer Metrics

As outlined in the report, the Solana Foundation gauges network expansion by monitoring the count of monthly active developers. Accordingly, throughout the last year, Solana has consistently maintained a range of 2,500 to 3,000 monthly active developers.

However, the organization noted that the metric exclusively takes into account public repositories, suggesting a possible underestimation of the overall developer count.

Consequently, the report emphasizes that the metric of monthly active developers is insufficient for assessing the health of a developer community. Following this sentiment, it noted the importance of developer retention by defining it as developers who make at least one commit in three consecutive months.

In 2023, Solana’s 3-month developer retention increased from 31% to over 50%, potentially attributed to improved onboarding, the clarity of Solana as a choice for developers, and increased opportunities in the ecosystem. This was attributed by the network to its efforts in enhancing onboarding, conducting developer bootcamps, and receiving support from ecosystem teams, such as Helius, have contributed to this positive trend.

In terms of developer experience, the report highlights the importance of developer skill levels in determining the success of a blockchain network.

According to the Foundation, the Solana developer base is largely composed of experienced professionals, with a majority of developers entering the ecosystem with at least three years of experience. This suggests that Solana’s applications are being developed by a more senior-level talent pool, which is likely to contribute to the network’s success.

Growth

“Although the Solana ecosystem is relatively new — Solana mainnet beta went live in March 2020 —  its developer ecosystem has grown to the second largest ecosystem in total monthly active developers. This growth is due to many different factors and it is hard to pinpoint what led to the majority of developers joining,” the report stated.

The rapid growth of the Solana ecosystem is attributed to the active support of the Solana Foundation through initiatives such as Solana Hackathons, Solana Hacker Houses, Breakpoint, educational bootcamps, and sponsored university events, the report stated. Additionally, ecosystem-led groups such as SuperteamDAO, mtnDAO, Metcamp, and Gen3 have contributed to the expansion.

“We expect the Solana Hackathons to be a top indicator for the health of the developer ecosystem. There have been eight Solana Foundation-sponsored hackathons since 2020. Over the past three years, more than 3000 projects have launched and over $600 million in funding has been raised for projects submitted to the hackathons. With each hackathon, the number of project submissions has increased. The most recent hackathon, Solana Hyperdrive, had more than 900 submissions,” the report disclosed.

Solana Ecosystem Call IRL

In the Philippines, the Blockchain Lead Organization and Knowledge Center (The BLOKC) will be hosting a “Solana Ecosystem Call IRL” in Pasig City on January 11th.

The BLOKC invites its members to an in-person event to foster collaboration and learning among Solana builders. The event is free of charge, and interested attendees are encouraged to RSVP.

According to the organzation, the event will be attended by James F of Chain Crisis, a Solana-based blockchain pay-to-play-and-earn (P2PAE) game.

Last October, the first Bahay Ni SOL Community Meetup, part of The BLOKC’s BUILDING BLOKCs series, took place in Cebu. The event, hosted at enSpace, aimed to cultivate a community of students and professionals dedicated to advancing blockchain and web3 technologies for national development. Attendees included a diverse group of students, professionals, and young entrepreneurs interested in these sectors.

Last year, The BLOKC collaborated with the Solana Foundation to address the talent deficit in the Philippines’ blockchain industry. The two entities conducted a series of bootcamps to empower skilled developers. The Solana Developers’ Bootcamp offered 10 intensive two-week training sessions with hands-on coaching by experienced Solana developers, aiming to showcase participants’ skills with the Solana blockchain and compete for prizes.
