San Antonio Spurs 2023 NBA Draft Recap

Date:

With the NBA Draft taking place Thursday night, here is a recap of the San Antonio Spurs’ draft.

The first pick in the 2023 NBA Draft saw the San Antonio Spurs select Victor Wembanyama. Wemby is a generational talent who has been talked about as the first pick in the draft for the last year, and last night it came to life.

Wembanyama was very emotional after getting drafted. He grew up in France watching the Spurs since they had fellow Frenchmen Tony Parker and Boris Diaw.

The Spurs also held the 33rd and 44th picks in the draft.

They selected Leonard Miller with the 33rd pick, who ended up being traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves for future second round picks.

With the 44th pick in the draft, the Spurs selected another player from France, Sidy Cissoko. Cissoko played for the NBA G League Ignite last season.

Undrafted Free Agents

The Spurs continued to add young talent after the draft. They signed Sir’Jabari Rice, a guard from the University of Texas, to a two-way contract.

They also signed Charles Bediako, a center from the University of Alabama, to a training camp deal.

What the Spurs Still Need

The Spurs failed to trade back into the first round to get a starting level point guard. Expect them to sign a point guard in free agency or bring back Tre Jones.

Overall, the Spurs were one of the draft winners since they added a generational talent in Victor and a good young player in Cissoko who was expected to go higher.
