Sam Howell will Start for Commanders in Week 18

Date:

After being eliminated from playoff contention, the Washington Commanders are going to see what they have in their rookie quarterback. Sam Howell is getting the starting nod against the Cowboys. It was originally announced that both Taylor Heinicke and Howell would see time.

PFF’s Ari Meirov reported the news via Twitter on Wednesday morning.

Howell played his college ball at North Carolina, and was a three year starter. He threw for over 3,000 yards in all three of those seasons, and collected 38, 30 and 24 passing touchdowns respectively. He also stepped up his rushing game in his last season at UNC, running for 183 yards and a whopping 11 scores.

The Commanders selected Howell with the 144th overall pick in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. This Week 18 game will be his first NFL action. He will also be the third starting quarterback for Washington after going back and forth between Carson Wentz and Heinicke.
