In recent weeks, the power of AI has again entertained the public. It is after several social media personalities posted high school-themed yearbook snaps. These AI-generated photos  evoke memories from the 20th century to the early 2000s, when people would go to studios to shoot pictures.

But take note that these photos were taken without much effort, as they are just filters—edited through the help of an AI tool.

AI Yearbook: EPIK’s Premium Feature

The AI Yearbook filter is a premium feature of EPIK, an AI photo editor developed by SNOW Corporation, a South Korea-based camera app and interactive entertainment company. This filter can generate vintage-looking yearbook photos of the user in different styles.

Before launching EPIK last June, SNOW also introduced the Snow AI Profile App, the app where users can find the K-Idol filter, which makes them look like Korean pop celebrities.

Basically, EPIK claims to use “professional” editing tools with the help of AI technology to produce natural-looking photos with specific filters.

On its app, aside from the AI Yearbook filter, the photo editor also offers a photo enhancer, background remover, and hairstyle and expressions generator, all of which are generated by its AI tool.

Manually, users can access various editing tools like HSL, curves, split tone, selective, lux, texture, grain, brilliance, vignette, crop, rotate, mirror, flip, perspective, adjust resolution, batch, patch, and clone, which can help users adjust the color, mood, composition, and details of their photos.

Additionally, in terms of its features, it also has a “Perfect Portrait” feature, which allows its users to retouch their skin, reshape their face and body shape, apply make-up, and even accessories. It also offers a “Creative Tools” feature, which enables its users to try “trendy” filters, effects, stickers, templates, and AI-generated collages.

To create vintage-looking yearbook photos of them, users should click the “AI Yearbook” button on the EPIK-AI Photo Editor app, upload the number of selfies required, select gender, and choose the “Create Yearbook Images” button. After the AI-generated collage has been shown, users can edit the photos with some filters, frames, and backgrounds.

As of this writing, the EPIK-AI Photo Editor app has been downloaded more than 50 million times on the Google Play Store and has a rating of 3.8 out of 5 stars.

Is AI Yearbook Filter Too Risky to Use?

In an opinion piece written by Manila Bulletin Columnist Art Samaniego, Samaniego emphasized that EPIK’s “extensive” collection of user data raises concern over potential misuse or unauthorized access to it.

“Notably, the application permits the sharing of any information users provide to other users via the application. This provision means that users acknowledging and agreeing to this policy can be contacted via the application, introducing another layer of potential intrusion and unwarranted communications,” the editorial column read.

On its app, EPIK admitted that it collects user information, including nickname, profile images, photos, facial recognition, location information, and even behavioral advertising information. However, the app assured that it permanently deletes facial image data within three years of the last interaction or sooner if the initial purpose for collection no longer exists.

“The collected data, coupled with sharing practices, can potentially be used to create comprehensive user profiles, heightening fears about user privacy and the exploitation of personal data for marketing or other malicious purposes,” Samaniego refuted. “The combination of metadata, face recognition data, and other collected information can provide detailed insights into users’ identities and preferences, posing risks of exploitation.”

Talking about data safety, it can be read on EPIK’s Google Play Store “About” page that: “Safety starts with understanding how developers collect and share your data. Data privacy and security practices may vary based on your use, region, and age. The developer provided this information and may update it over time.”

“If you are a fan of any apps that collect user information, be vigilant about the permissions you grant to these apps and the information you share, considering the potential dangers associated with data collection by apps like Epik AI Photo Editor,” Samaniego concluded. “I believe the National Privacy Commission (NPC) needs to scrutinize the data collection practices of such applications to ensure user privacy and data security.”
