During the press conference for the PWB 2023, DICT Director Emmy Lou Delfin and DTI Director Jo-Dann Darong delivered speeches highlighting the significance of the Philippine Blockchain Week in advancing the government’s objectives of fostering collaboration, driving innovation, and promoting digitization across the country.

“At DTI, we promise to support all initiatives that will gear towards the attainment of the vision of making the Philippines not just innovative and creative, but more competitive through blockchain,” Darong stated, highlighting his support to encourage a whole-of-society approach to integrating blockchain technology.

He also stressed that the Philippine Blockchain Week is an ideal platform to nurture creativity and innovation, aligning with the department’s vision for the inaugural Philippine Creative Industry Month in September.

Additionally, the importance of government support and collaboration in driving blockchain adoption and fostering innovations in the country was emphasized by Lim.

“Government intervention and support have always been critical for the adoption of blockchain technology in any country. For the Philippines, our government’s broad-minded stance will be instrumental in positioning us to becoming the blockchain capital of Asia,” she noted.

This year’s PBW 2023 is scheduled to be held from September 19 to 21, 2023, at the Marriott Grand Ballroom, Newport World Resorts in Manila. The event is anticipated to attract a diverse audience from various industries and regions worldwide, uniting influential leaders in the blockchain and crypto field.

With the theme “BRKOUT,” the event aims to inspire attendees to challenge conventions, embrace new opportunities, and emerge as leaders in the blockchain space. The program will encompass engaging discussions on topics such as blockchain, fintech, the metaverse, regulation, Artificial Intelligence, privacy, and DeFi, reflecting the current landscape of the industry.

For this year’s run, the DICT will take the lead in organizing Blockchain 101, a program aimed at educating numerous students in the National Capital Region (NCR) about the potential opportunities in the blockchain industry. Further, the department will facilitate focus group discussions for government officials to advocate for the adoption of blockchain technology in storing government data.

Renowned fashion designer Michael Cinco will also make his debut in the blockchain space during the PBW 2023. Cinco, known for dressing celebrities and royalty, will collaborate with the event to showcase the fusion of fashion and the metaverse through a Metaverse Fashion Gala.

In addition, the PWB 2023 will feature sub-events like VC-startup matchmaking show in partnership with CNN Philippines’ “The Final Pitch,” a gaming expo in partnership with Tier One Entertainment featuring gamers, streamers, and cosplayers, and the global announcement of finalists for the NFTY Awards, a prestigious Web 3 awards show–created by Chris J Snook and Larry Namer, who formed their partnership after meeting at the inaugural PBW in November 2022.

The Philippine Blockchain Week cited that crypto users are approximately 6.13% of the total population in the Philippines, which amounts to nearly 7 million individuals–though it can be noted that the total users of Coins.ph, a local crypto wallet and exchange, is currently over 18 million users. Nevertheless, the statistic indicate a growing trend in blockchain adoption within the country, indicating the Philippines is on its way to establishing itself as a prominent global blockchain capital.
