Despite the Coronavirus pandemic plaguing the entire of 2020 and the month long lockdowns announced by the Governments across the world, the Indian patent office appears to have done a remarkable job in disposing patent and design applications. For instance, over 26000 patents have been issued by the patent office in 2020 as opposed to 23527 patents issued in 2019. Likewise, over 51000 patent applications were published in 2020 as opposed to 49351 patent publications in 2019.

In this post, we bring to you a recap of the patent and design statistics from 2020 and a comparison of these numbers with the statistics from 2019. The data provided herein is calculated for the respective calendar years (January to December). The data is likely to be significantly different from the data provided in the annual reports of the Indian Patent Office which take into account the financial year of March to April. Please note that the data is accurate to the extent of the information made available by the patent office through its online databases and official journals.

In 2020, a total of 51,325 patent applications were published. Of these, about 17,875 applications belong to Indian applicants or where the applicant’s address includes India. Based on the applicant city, Delhi tops the list with 2,275 patent applications followed by Bangalore with a total of 2,182 patent applications. Chennai based applicants filed 1,859 applications while Mumbai based applicant filed 1791 patent applications. Pune pipped Hyderabad by contributing a 1179 patent applications while Hyderabad contributed a total of 1049 applications. Numbers from Kolkata were significantly lower as compared to the other major cities in India as Kolkata contributed to a measly total of 317 patent applications.

A total of 26,309 patent applications were granted in 2020 marking an increase of roughly 12% from 2019. The maximum grants came from the Delhi patent office which issued as many as 9,314 patents. The Chennai patent office issued 8,838 patents while the Mumbai and Kolkata patent office issued 3,915 and 4,242 patents.

In terms of examination of applications and issue of First Examination Reports (FERs), the Chennai patent office issued over 22,400 FERs followed by the Delhi patent office which examined and issued FERs for 20,926 applications. The patent offices at Mumbai and Kolkata issued examination reports for 12,087 and 7,505 applications respectively. In all, the patent offices collectively issued 70,924 FERs in 2020 as opposed to 83,226 examination reports issued in 2019.

Industrial Designs

A total of 14,550 designs were registered in 2020 as compared to 14,529 registrations in 2019. Out of the 14,550 designs registered, about 1315 designs were filed by applicants residing or having place of business in Maharashtra while Delhi contributed to about 996 design registration. These numbers have decreased sharply for both Maharashtra and Delhi which contributed 2035 and 1764 designs in the year 2019. Design applications from Gujarat were also lower in 2020 as compared to the number of design filings in 2019. While in 2019 Gujarat had filed as many as 1375 design applications, this number in 2020 reduced to 743 designs. Likewise West Bengal contributed to merely 647 design registrations as opposed to its impressive tally of 1116 design registrations in 2019. Tamil Nadu received 508 design registrations while design registrations from Karnataka halved to 250 applications as opposed to 572 design registrations in 2019. Telangana and Andhra Pradesh were the only states from the list to see an increase in the number of design registrations in 2020.

This week’s Patent & Design data has been compiled from the Official Journal of Patents and Designs published by the patent office on the 8th of January 2021. These statistics are presented to you by the Patent attorneys and experts of BananaIP Counsels, India’s leading Intellectual Property Firm.

INDIAN PATENT STATISTICS

A total of 689 patent applications have been published in the 2^nd issue of the Patent Journal, 2021. Out of the 689 applications published in the journal, 173 applications account for early publications while 516 applications account for ordinary publications or publications occurring after the 18 – month period. A total of 474 applications have been granted last week as compared to 645 grants in the week preceding the last thereby marking a decrease of about 26.51%

Slot machine manufacturer gets patent for crypto payment options

Many gamblers may no longer need to use Bitcoin ATMs in casinos, as they could transfer their crypto directly to casino gaming accounts.

The largest manufacturer of slot machines in the world has just received a patent that would allow customers to access crypto payments for gambling.

According to records from the United States Patent and Trademark Office, International Game Technology, or IGT, received a patent today for a system that would enable gamblers to transfer crypto from their accounts into a “gaming establishment account.” The patent filing shows payments in Bitcoin (BTC), Bitcoin Cash (BCH) and Ether (ETH) as examples for users transferring crypto from their private wallets to wallets connected to casino accounts.

“IGT secured this patent to bolster its industry-leading patent portfolio in anticipation of any possible future direction in regulated gaming involving cryptocurrency,” said spokesperson Phil O’Shaughnessy.

The patent news comes the same day that IGT announced that it had gained regulatory approval in Nevada for players to use its Resort Wallet to make cashless deposits for playing the slots. The company referenced the current pandemic when explaining the system, claiming it offered a “reduced-contact, safer” gaming experience. This move would seemingly eliminate the need for many to use Bitcoin ATMs in casinos, as players wouldn’t have to cash out their crypto to play the gaming machines.

Las Vegas casinos were some of the earliest adopters of crypto. In 2014, The D Las Vegas Casino Hotel and the Golden Gate Hotel and Casino announced they would accept BTC in their shops, but not on the gaming floor. Last year, however, demand surged among Winning Poker Network players seeking Bitcoin payouts, with the network reporting that it was distributing more than $160 million monthly.

Based in the United Kingdom, IGT once controlled more than 70% of the U.S. slot machine market, but as of 2019 that lead had shrunk to 33.2%, which is still ahead of runners-up Scientific Games and Aristocrat. According to a Global Slot Machines Market Report filed in 2019, the slot machine market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of roughly 5.5% over the next four years, reaching more than $4 billion by 2024.

Gambling Tech Giant IGT Patents Way to Fund Bets With Bitcoin

IGT’s bitcoin funding patent comes as the gambling tech giant’s plans for cashless wagering move forward.

A top gambling tech company has patented a way for bitcoiners to pay for their next digital roll of the dice with cryptocurrency.

International Game Technology plc, which builds slots and other tech for casinos, has yet to reveal any plans to integrate bitcoin, bitcoin cash and ether into its tech. But its new patent awarded Tuesday covers a means for HODLER-gamblers to pay for their bets with any of the three.

As described in U.S. Patent and Trademark Office filings, users of IGT’s method would be able to transfer cryptocurrency into their gaming accounts as a means of payment. There, the crypto would convert to fiat currency after payment of a fee.

IGT’s filings include drawings of a mobile phone application for placing the deposits as well as a slot machine that would theoretically facilitate the actual bet. One drawing included a live bitcoin wallet address that IGT appears to have set up but never used.

But the patent is not exclusive to slots machines; rather, it also covers the means for moving crypto into the gambler’s account. IGT could theoretically roll out a now-patented method for crypto funding across any of its digital gambling platforms. The company has stakes in slots, lotteries and the burgeoning sports-betting scene.

Also Tuesday, IGT announced that Nevada’s powerful Gaming Control Board had approved its plans for a cashless wagering system that allows gamblers to fund bets at slot machines and table games with a tap of their phone. That announcement was mum on crypto integration.

IGT did not immediately respond to queries.
