Date:

  1. OpenAI CTO Mira Murati had her Twitter account hijacked, leading to a scam cryptocurrency airdrop.
  2. The scam involved a malicious ERC-20 token called OPENAI, which was promoted through the account.
  3. Despite lasting only an hour, the tweet managed to reach an estimated 80,000 users before being taken down.

OpenAI Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Mira Murati had her Twitter account hacked, which impacted a significant number of users. The attackers exploited the compromised account to execute a fraudulent cryptocurrency airdrop, sending shockwaves through the community.

The scam revolved around a malicious ERC-20 token named OPENAI, which the hackers used to deceive unsuspecting users. Despite its short lifespan, lasting only an hour, the fraudulent tweet managed to reach an estimated 80,000 users before it was swiftly removed.

Security experts, such as Scam Sniffer, have identified the attack as the work of Pink Drainer, a form of “malware-as-a-service.” This type of service allows individuals to quickly establish malicious sites for hosting scams. It is reported that Pink Drainer charges up to 30% of any stolen assets in exchange for the use of its software.

According to Scam Sniffer, Pink Drainer has been particularly active in recent days, targeting over 500 individuals since May 30 and amassing stolen funds exceeding $1,800,000. This alarming trend highlights the growing sophistication and prevalence of cybercrime in the cryptocurrency space.

The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining strong security measures and being cautious while engaging with cryptocurrency-related content online. Users are advised to verify the authenticity of any token airdrops or promotions before participating and to report suspicious activities promptly.

OpenAI has not released an official statement regarding the incident at the time of writing, but it is expected that they will take immediate action to address the security breach and reinforce their protocols to prevent such occurrences in the future.
