Anaheim dropped a close one to Edmonton 5-3 on Friday.
The game was back and forth the whole way, with Edmonton dominating the end of the third period to take care of the Ducks for good.
It was a huge night at the Honda Center with over 17,000 in attendance to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Ducks and 30 years of the Offspring’s album Smash. Unfortunately for the Ducks faithful it was a big night for Evander Kane as he picked up a hat trick for the Oilers, even receiving some hats on the ice despite the game being in Anaheim. Corey Perry, the former Duck added an assist for Edmonton. Ryan Strome the former Oiler picked up a pair of goals for the Ducks leading the way scoring wise, as well as Cam Fowler who added one of his own.
Anaheim was ready for the challenge of facing a red hot Edmonton. Edmonton had just won 16 straight games before dropping one Tuesday to Vegas. Not happy with the loss Edmonton had changed all of their defensive pairings going into Friday night.
At first the Ducks looked in control as they outshot Edmonton 19-13 in the first and did not give up a single shot on goal in the games first four minutes. Until none other than Corey Perry put a wrist shot on net with 16 minutes left in the first. 10 minutes into the period Ryan Strome would create a turnover for a break away, but Pickard would make the save for Edmonton.
Finally with 1:20 left in the period Cam Fowler would score the first power play goal by a Ducks defenseman all season after his wrist shot found the net after a Henrique draw win.
The second period would see a good amount of action. First Corey Perry would knock out Ducks goalie John Gibson’s stick, then in the chaos of Gibson looking to the refs for a whistle Evander Kane scored his first goal of the night at the 9:11 mark.29 seconds later Ryan Strome would get the Ducks the lead back after his wrist shot. Henrique and Carlsson would pick up assists.Kane however, would go on to tie things with seven minutes left in the second as the two teams ended up heading into the third knotted at two.
The period would start with the Ducks subbing out John Gibson for Lukas Dostal after suffering a lower body injury.
Strome started the period strong for the Ducks, he would score the team’s second power play goal of the night and give them a 3-2 lead.Unfortunately, it was an oil spill the rest of the way. Connor McDavid, who the Ducks had tried to keep in check all night would go off for three assists. Two of which were to Evander Kane goals as he picked up a hat trick and the Ducks would take the loss 5-3 and their four game point streak comes to a close.
Ducks Coach Greg Cronin really stressed puck control going into this half of the season and it was apparent Friday night as the Ducks did look in control most of the game, and kept good possession of the puck. They spent a lot of time on offense and applied pressure on the opposing defense. However, Edomonton did enough in the third to dominate the game.
Anaheim will return to action on Tuesday when they head to Montreal to face the Canadians at 7:00 P.M. EST 4:00 PM PST on BSSD, BSSC, and NHL Power Play on ESPN+.
