Trevor Lawrence, the top pick of this year’s National Football League Draft, became the first athlete to get a significant amount of his signing bonus in cryptocurrency.
This is after the player entered into a multi-year contract with crypto tracking app Blockfolio, with the deal that his bonus will be paid in Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH) and Solana (SOL.).
Cited by Cryptoslate, Lawrence has tweeted: “Pumped to announce I’ve joined Blockfolio! Excited to help bring these two worlds together.”
Terms of the deal include Lawrence helping to educate newcomers with cryptocurrencies by using the Blockfolio app to show how users can buy, sell and trade digital currency without fees.
The future of both worlds
Sina Nader, the chief operating officer of Blockfolio, was not short on words in expressing her enthusiasm about the partnership between them and the NFL’s top newcomer.
In a statement, Nader said “we believe that Trevor is the future of football and we think that crypto is the future of finance.”
The company official also said that Trevor “represents a lot of the promise and potential of football” at the highest level. Nader also believes crypto represents the same thing at the highest level of finance.
Part of a bigger plan
As splendid and wise as the move was, getting Lawrence to sign with Blockfolio on a multi-year deal is just part of a bigger strategic initiative for its parent company, crypto exchange FTX.
In fact, in an effort to popularize its services among newcomers to the booming crypto market, FTX has bought the naming rights to the Miami Heat stadium earlier this year.
Nader pointed out that cryptocurrencies have not yet reached mass adoption, with only less than 10% of the entire population of the U.S. owning digital currencies. With their move, they are hoping to guide newcomers to navigate this surging economy.
