New Orleans Pelicans 2023 NBA Draft Profile

Date:

The 2023 NBA Draft takes place on Thursday, June 22, as both rounds are wrapped up in one night. As it approaches, TGH will be taking a quick look some teams’ draft strategies, and shedding some light on what direction they will go with their picks.. Here is the New Orleans Pelicans NBA Draft profile for 2023.

Summary

New Orleans made the Play-In Tournament for the second consecutive year, but did not make the actual postseason. They finished the season with a 42-40 record, which was good enough for second in their division and ninth in the conference.

2023 Draft Picks

The Pelicans have one pick in the 2023 NBA Draft.

First Round (one pick):

Team Needs

  • Efficient shooting
  • Rim protection

Projected Targets

Pick #14:

Unless the Pelicans trade this pick away for multiple later selections, they’re going to have to pick which team need they deem more valuable with their only pick. Given there aren’t a lot of options for taking a big man early here, this profile assumes they’ll pick shooting.

If they do choose shot-making, Gradey Dick is definitely the guy. He’ll probably be available too, as other teams weigh high-ceiling, low-floor guys at the draft slots above them.

Dick is maybe the best pure shooter in this draft. He’s deadly from three-point range, can create his own shot while pulling up, and moves well enough to be a catch-and-shoot maestro. While his defense is suspect, he at least wants to defend. Give him some pure, unadulterated defensive coaching and he’ll thrive as a three-and-D player.
