In what was possibly the most high profile match of the first round, we had Natus Vincere meet G2 on Mirage. It was Aleksandr “s1mple” Kostyliev‘s team which prevailed in the end after a set of overtime with a 19-17 scoreline.
The reigning champions started their title defense with a win
Natus Vincere got off to the better start in their game, with s1mple beginning the matchup with an aggressive push in the pistol round, while Kirill “Boombl4” Mikhailov finished off the round with a knife kill.
The match quickly descended into a high-octane brawl, with G2 winning a round with unarmored pistols to get the upper hand in the game, enabling them to quickly reach a 4-3 lead. The teams kept trading rounds throughout the first half, as G2 came out the other end with a narrow 8-7 lead.
Natus Vincere started off their T side with a pistol round win, evening the score at 8-8. G2 were unable to fight back for a while as they were outmaneuvered by the CIS side, before they started to find their feet, winning five rounds in a row. A couple of trademark slow rounds by Natus Vincere once again evened up the score at 14-14.
At that point, G2 decided to forcebuy but it was none other than s1mple who shut them down with a 1v2 clutch, putting his team up to match point, before a B hold by the European mix team forced out overtime.
Once in overtime, Natus Vincere took control of the game with two rounds on their T side, one of which being a 3v5 round won by some great positioning by s1mple and Ilya “Perfecto” Zalutskiy. As the sides switched, they kept up their momentum and won the game 19-17.
Imperial were unable to get their offensive side going even after that however, as they got just one more round which meant they were 13-2 behind at the half.
The Brazilians were able to win the second pistol round, mounting a decent comeback attempt as they were able to get up to a 11 rounds with all members off the team contributing with several multikills in important positions. BIG were able to get their T side together in the end, however, coming out 16-11 winners.
