In the ever-evolving realm of NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens), the makeup industry and the traditional art world are taking their respective stances. NARS Cosmetics is diving headfirst into this domain with an auction that will undoubtedly capture attention, while the Jackson Pollock Studio is preserving a vital fragment of art history digitally.

NARS Cosmetics is releasing an NFT collection influenced by the shade known as “Orgasm” to commemorate National Orgasm Day on July 31. Five artists, Dr. Alex Box, Serwah Attafuah, Nina “Ninocence” Hawkins, Clara Bacou, and Damara Ingles, were enlisted to craft bespoke digital works for this theme. The auction, dubbed “Orgasm, Activated,” will begin on SuperRare starting July 25, with all earnings and royalties directed to the artists. Winners will not only obtain the unique artwork but will also be rewarded with a range of NARS cosmetics and a consultation with the brand’s makeup specialist. To elevate community engagement, a competition under the #NARSFilterContest hashtag has been introduced, with participants standing a chance to win a surprise “orgasm gift.”

Gabrielle Archambault, of NARS, voiced enthusiasm for the novel artistic possibilities emerging in the digital realm. While this might be a fresh venture for many, NARS had previously ventured into NFTs with lip balm redemptions and collaborated with NFT project Boss Beauties on a “Odentity” collection.

Beyond the Edge

On the traditional art front, the, in alliance with Iconic Moments, has launched an NFT collection entitled “Beyond the Edge.” It immortalizes the paint-splattered floor adjacent to Pollock’s iconic works in his New York studio. Helen Harrison, the studio director, emphasized the significance of this initiative for the preservation of the studio. Purchasers of these NFTs will also receive a hand-numbered physical print of the art.

Interestingly, this isn’t the floor’s first appearance in popular culture. Its unique colors adorned a limited-edition Crocs footwear line in 2013. With NFTs, however, a new level of detail emerges, enabling an intricate examination of the studio floor, down to individual hairs trapped in the paint.

As August approaches, the collection will evolve, introducing Pollock Ordinals inscriptions based on the Bitcoin protocol. Plus, collaborations are set with digital artists for “Art From Art” – a series inspired by Pollock’s style. Lucréce, a renowned artist, is slated to be the first contributor.

In the mid-20th century, Jackson Pollock’s unconventional methods rattled the art world. Harrison likened Pollock’s avant-garde approach to today’s digital artists, suggesting Pollock would’ve thrived in this digital era. CEO Chris Cummings of Iconic Moments affirmed Pollock’s influence on contemporary generative art.

As both cosmetics and traditional art sectors delve into the NFT world, it’s evident that this digital movement transcends industries and promises exciting cross-disciplinary collaborations in the future.
