With the Jordan Brand logo on his 23XI car and team owner Michael Jordan in attendance, Tyler Reddick stole the win at Talladega Superspeedway for his first win of the season.

Coming off turn four on the final lap, Michael McDowell led a train of three Fords featuring himself, Brad Keselowski, and Noah Gragson. As Keselowski got a run, McDowell blocked and lost control of his car. This triggered a massive crash in the tri-oval, but Reddick was able to swoop by everyone from fourth and take the win.

“Gotta give a lot of credit to Ty Gibbs and Martin Truex,” Reddick said. “It was just us Toyotas left and they pushed me with everything they had. Without those pushes, we don’t win this race.”

Near Disaster

Reddick’s victory salvaged what was almost a disaster of a race for Toyota. With just under 40 laps left, a large group of Toyotas pitted under green to go off strategy from the rest of the field. This allowed them to form their own single file line and avoid saving fuel, something the main pack was unable to achieve.

This strategy worked well, until it failed in dramatic fashion. A stack up entering turn three resulted in four of the seven Toyotas in line crashing each other out of the race. This pileup neutralized the field, setting it up for the run to the finish.

Bubba Wallace was one of the drivers involved, and was left frustrated by the incident.

“We were all pushing really hard to keep our line going. We had a plan, just didn’t execute it,” Wallace said. “I hate it. Doesn’t make us look good at all.”

Another Next-Gen Car Dilemma

Fuel mileage was a major factor in the race, and played a key role in Toyota’s strategy. With the Next-Gen car’s extremely high amounts of drag, it burns more fuel than any other Cup car in recent history.

Because of this, drivers were running half throttle around the 2.66 mile track for the majority of the race. Harrison Burton, who finished tenth for Wood Brothers Racing, commented on the unusual style of racing.

“I’ve never driven that slow in a race car in my life,” Burton said. “One hand on the wheel, itching my eyes, hanging out. I don’t know what the fix is either, it’s a bit of a predicament.”

This serves as yet another issue that has arisen since the Next-Gen car’s introduction in 2022. Drivers have expressed frustration with this issue in the past, but Sunday’s race at Talladega featured the most drastic representation of the issue yet.
