MGM Resorts International, a leading hotel and casino conglomerate, has confirmed a significant cybersecurity issue that has led to widespread outages affecting its systems across the United States. The incident, which began on Sunday, has disrupted operations at several of the company’s properties, including those in Las Vegas, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, New Jersey, New York, and Ohio.
In a statement released on X, formerly known as Twitter, MGM Resorts acknowledged that it identified a cybersecurity issue affecting some of its systems.
“Promptly after detecting the issue, we initiated an investigation with the help of external cybersecurity experts,” the statement read. “We have also informed law enforcement and took immediate measures to safeguard our systems and data, which included shutting down certain systems.”
The company’s official website, which is also experiencing the outage, advises guests to “download the MGM Rewards app” for restaurant options and reservations. Furthermore, the BetMGM website in Nevada has acknowledged login issues for some of its users.
While the exact nature of the cyberattack remains undisclosed, the impact seems extensive. A source revealed that not only MGM’s Las Vegas resorts — such as Aria, Bellagio, Luxor, MGM Grand, and Mandalay Bay — are affected, but also its regional resorts like MGM Springfield in Massachusetts, MGM National Harbor, and the Empire City Casino in New York were offline at the time of reporting.
Details about the cyberattack, including whether any data was extracted from MGM’s systems, are still under wraps.
“Our investigation is ongoing, and we are working diligently to ascertain the nature and extent of this matter,” MGM said in its X statement. The timeline for the restoration of the computer systems is also uncertain.
This isn’t the first time MGM Resorts has faced cybersecurity challenges. Last year, the personal data of over 140 million guests was leaked on Telegram, which included sensitive information like passport and driver’s license numbers.
