Metal Gear Solid 3 Port Review

Date:

The beloved video game franchise, Metal Gear Solid received a remake announcement. Longtime fans were shocked but happy to hear that Metal Gear Solid 3, perhaps the most popular game out of five Metal Gear titles, is getting a remake. There is no official release date for the remake itself. Konami announced a re-release of some of the previous titles such as Metal Gear Solid 1 and Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty.

Fans can purchase the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection, which includes;

  • Metal Gear
  • Metal Gear Solid 2: Solid Snake
  • Metal Gear Solid (Including VR Missions/Special Missions)
  • Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (HD Collection version)
  • Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (HD Collection version)
  • Metal Gear (NES/FC version)
  • Snake’s Revenge

If fans are only interested in one game of the franchise, the games can be purchased individually.

The gameplay:

For those unfamiliar with Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and the gameplay, you take the role of Snake. An American CIA agent who is sent on a mission to infiltrate Soviet territory. With different environments such as jungles, swamps, deserts, and snowy environments, players can use a variety of means to sneak, distract, or take out enemies.

However, soldiers are not the only enemies Snake encounters, as mentioned before, the environment can be used to the players’ advantage but is filled with dangerous animals such as snakes, crocodiles, and insects.

Snake Eater has tons of hidden easter eggs to previous titles or other mediums. For a game that was originally released over 10 years ago, there is so much hidden and entertaining content that comes through a little exploration of the game mechanics.

Explosive, engaging gameplay that allows for immersive stealth situations, combined with a great soundtrack and voice acting is what sets Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater apart from the rest of the titles, even to this day of modern gaming.

The technical quality:

Since its re-release, however, fans have been disappointed with the port of the game, specifically PC players.

Metal Gear Solid 3 has received an “HD edition” since its original release on Nov. 14, 2004. The HD edition was available on the PlayStation 3, and while fans agree that the HD edition is better than the original PlayStation 2 release, Konami unfortunately kept the game the same as the edition that is on the PlayStation 3.

The game is capped at 720p instead of 1080p, the controls for the mouse and keyboard are wonky and cannot be rebinded. Leaving players having to download and install mods to be able to make the changes they want.

There is nothing necessarily wrong with this port but missing quality-of-life features, having the same framerate and resolution as the HD collection that was released on Nov. 8, 2011, more than 10 years ago. It can be hard to justify purchasing the PC port, especially if fans already own a copy on the PS3.

For players who are not worried about the resolution or framerate and just want to experience the game for the first time, there is no reason to not buy it as the gameplay and story are still the same.

The verdict:

Gamers who have never experienced Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, should try it. For players who are only on PC, it is available on Steam for purchase, unfortunately, it will be the only way to play this game. If you have a functioning PlayStation 3, you can also purchase the game on there since there is not much of a difference between the two versions.

For an original PS2 title, Hideo Kojima, the director of Metal Gear Solid 3, put much effort into a game with his clever references, incredible casting, and the team at Konami that this is truly a game that is often overlooked.

What the PC port lacks in terms of quality-of-life features and mechanical aspects, the gameplay and story make up for those flaws, giving first-time players a brand-new story that will leave a long-lasting impression.
