The 2023 NBA Draft will be an important event for teams to build for their future. Here is the Maxwell Lewis 2023 NBA Draft Profile.

Maxwell Lewis Background

Lewis spent two seasons at Pepperdine, improving from his first season to his second. Now he is in the 2023 NBA Draft.

Out of prep school, Lewis was a four-star recruit out of Arizona who chose to leave the state to play for Pepperdine. He averaged 11 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game as a freshman. The team struggled with a 7-25 record. In 2022-2023, Lewis put up 17.1 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game. Unfortunately, the team continued to struggle and had a 9-22 record.

Following the season, Lewis declared for the 2023 NBA Draft. He is currently projected to be a first-round pick.

Maxwell Lewis Strengths

Lewis is a versatile scorer and that should translate to the NBA level. He can get to the basket, with the ability to finish at the rim using either hand. Lewis can also finish in the lane with floaters or convert over bigger defenders. His mid-range jump shot could be more efficient, but he can pull up from that range. He can also shoot from deep decently well, both off the catch and the dribble.

He can be a very good NBA defender for a few reasons. Lewis has unique length for a wing player, which stretches seven feet. This helps him contest shots and guard on the ball well. He also has decent footspeed, which gives him the ability to stay in front on the defensive end. These two things can make him versatile on that end of the floor.

Lewis can be a creator on offense, not just for himself, but for his teammates. He can creat space with his dribble moves to get to the basket or pull up and shoot. When he attacks the paint, he shows a good recognition of when help is coming and finds his teammates for open shots.

Maxwell Lewis Weaknesses

Lewis turns the ball over way too much. While he has good passes, he can be too ambitious at time, which leads to the turnovers. A lot of times defenses would focus on him, as he was the bright spot for Pepperdine, so with more floor spacing and not as much attention on him in the NBA, he should improve in this area.

His shot selection can also improve. He took way too many contested shots in college, but as mentioned a lot of the defensive focus was on him. In the NBA, he will need to be ready to catch and shoot, as he should only be taking open shots.

While the potential is there for him to be a good and versatile defender, Lewis can improve in this area. His footspeed is decent, but he can struggle to guard fast guards. He also needs to be more engaged as an off-ball defender. Lewis can help more and be a better team defender.
