Harrison wasn’t the top recruit, but he developed into a star during his time in college. Now he is in the 2024 NFL Draft.
As a four-star recruit in the class of 2021, Harrison signed with Ohio State out of Pennsylvania. He didn’t play much immediately, registering 11 catches for 139 yards and three touchdowns as a freshman. In 2022, Harrison took a huge step forward with 77 receptions for 1,263 yards and 14 touchdowns. His play helped Ohio State go 11-2 with an appearance in the College Football Playoff. He had another great season in 2023 with 67 catches for 1,211 yards and 14 touchdowns. Ohio State was able to win 11 games again with the aid of Harrison.
Following the 2023 season, Harrison Jr. declared for the 2024 NFL draft. He currently is projected to be a top-five selection.
Marvin Harrison Jr. Strengths
Harrison looks the part of a prototypical NFL wide receiver. He stands at 6-foot-4 and 205 pounds, which is excellent for the position. His ability to use his size well shows up in several areas, as he can win jump balls well and fight off press coverage. It will be tough for NFL cornerbacks to match up with a player of his size.
For his size, Harrison is a great athlete. He shows good speed, but even more impressively, he has good quickness and agility. Harrison shows good jumping ability and body control, especially near the sidelines. With his blend of size and athleticism, Harrison is able to win against coverage in a variety of ways.
He is a good route-runner, who runs an expanded route-tree. Harrison has good releases at the line of scrimmage to help free him of press coverage. He also can get in and out of his breaks quickly, creating good separation. His ability to stop and start only helps with his ability to run routes.
Marvin Harrison Jr. Weaknesses
Harrison really improved his ability to run after the catch in 2023. He is not bad at running after the catch, but he can be more of a straight-line runner who doesn’t break many tackles. Harrison also doesn’t have great elusiveness with the ball in his hands, so his best course of action is typically to outrun defenders.
He has good hands overall, but has had some focus drops. Harrison needs to make sure to look the ball in rather than turning upfield before completing the catch. If he can clean up some focus drops, his catch radius and soft hands make him one of the best in the class at catching the ball.
While he has good size for an NFL wide receiver, he could be more tenacious as a run blocker. Wide receivers on the outside don’t need to do a whole lot, but in some offenses he could be asked to block more. If he commits to it, he could be a very good blocking wide receiver.
