King had a unique career where he starred early, but struggled later at Penn State. He is now in the 2024 NFL Draft.
As a four-star recruit in the class of 2021, King signed with Penn State out of Michigan. He made one start as a freshman, but played in every game. King totaled 21 total tackles and five interceptions. His play helped the Nittany Lions go 7-6. He stepped into the starting lineup in 2022 and had a great season. King totaled 30 tackles, three interceptions and 18 passes defended, aiding the Nittany Lions going 11-2. In 2023, he registered 29 tackles and two passes defended. He led Penn State to a 10-win season in 2023.
Following the 2023 season, Kalen King declared for the 2024 NFL Draft. He is currently projected to be a mid-round pick.
Kalen King Strengths
King is a decent athlete for the NFL at the corner position. He has good quickness and agility. Any time a play comes close to him in a short area of the field, he can make a play on the ball. He also has solid leaping ability to help him matchup.
Over his career, King has demonstrated good ball skills. Specifically in 2022, he was able to get a good jump on the ball when it was in the air. He was aggressive at the catchpoint, coming away with both passes defended and interceptions.
He has good awareness and route recognition. King can put himself in good position because he sees the routes receivers will run and can react to it. His knowledge of the game is going to help him, but so too is his ability to read the quarterback’s eyes.
Kalen King Weaknesses
King doesn’t have great height, length or strength. He measured in at 5-foot-11 and 190 pounds, which is a little below average and could give him difficulty matching up with some of the bigger receivers in the class. King also has below-average length at 30 and 7/8 inches. To go with it, his strength can be improved to meet NFL requirements.
There are some concerns over King’s long speed. This also showed up at the combine when he ran a 4.61-second 40-yard dash. He can struggle to keep up with speedy receivers and that could worsen in the NFL. King could need help over the top in the NFL to cover successfully in man to man.
Partially because of his lack of long speed, King can be a little bit grabby. His physical coverage can be good, but he can let it go too far. He will get flagged for it much more at the NFL level. King will need to trust his technique more at the NFL level.
