The antivirus and cryptocurrency OG John McAfee claims that all of his crypto wealth is gone. McAfee is currently imprisoned in Spain, awaiting the decision of his extradition hearing.

McAfee could spend the Rest of his Life in Prison

From drug offenses to murder, the avowed libertarian has amassed a long list of criminal accusations. Yet, the antivirus mogul has managed to outrun the persecuting authorities most of the time, until October 2020, when he was caught and jailed in Spain on the grounds of tax evasion charges.

While some of the accusations against McAfee are likely baseless and politically motivated, he openly admits that he hasn’t paid taxes for the last eight years. The Spanish authorities are expected to hand down a ruling in the next days, deciding whether McAfee will be extradited to the US. If extradited and found guilty, the 76-year-old could face a prison sentence of up to 30 years.

Is John McAfee really broke?

McAfee now reiterated his claim to be moneyless after he published a similar Tweet on June 9th:

After uncountable lawsuits and the reach of the FED’s I now have nothing. But inside these prison bars I have never felt more free. The things you believe you own, in reality own you.

He adds that his claim might not seem credible to everyone, which is indeed correct. In 2007, his wealth was estimated at 100 million USD, although McAfee suffered severe losses due to the financial crisis that began the same year.

Since the advent of cryptocurrencies, McAfee has earned millions of US-Dollars from crypto investments, promotions, consulting, and selling the intellectual rights to his biography. Investors who accuse McAfee of running fraudulent pump and dump schemes claim damages totaling to 13 million USD. In 2020, he launched his own privacy coin called GHOST, but abandoned to project only a few months afterwards. Also, McAfee was one of the first prominent supporters of Dogecoin.
