How Open the Spurs Would be to Trade Each Player

Date:

Their have been many rumors of the Spurs looking to make a trade or two before the NBA Draft. They are trying to trade up to pair a young point guard with their projected number one pick, Victor Wembanyama. This list will show how open the Spurs would be to trade each player on their active roster.

This list will not include impending free agents such as Tre Jones, Sandro Mamukelashvili, Keita Bates-Diop, Romeo Langford and Julian Champagnie.

Will Be Traded

Khem Birch: Birch was acquired last season from the Raptors in the Jakob Poeltl trade. He did not play one game last year due to knee problems. Birch is an undersized center that won’t be in the Spurs’ rotation next season. He could fetch a low second round pick if paired with another player.

Devonte’ Graham: Graham was another player that the Spurs acquired via trade last season. He was part of the trade that saw Josh Richardson shipped to the Pelicans. Graham didn’t fit well in San Antonio’s system last season as the starting point guard. The streaky guard is only 28 years old and could be a starting point guard in the league, just not on the Spurs. He could bring in at least a second round pick and expect teams to call and try to get him.

Doug McDermott: McDermott is a knock-down shooter and will be looked at by many teams. Fans were surprised the Spurs didn’t move him at last year’s trade deadline. Although fitting the Spurs’ system, he doesn’t fit the rebuild as the team tries to get younger. McDermott will be sought after by many teams and could bring in multiple picks if dealt.

Should Listen to Offers

Charles Bassey: Bassey signed a four-year deal last season with San Antonio. As of right now, he is the backup center, but the Spurs could easily upgrade the position in free agency. The Spurs should listen to offers if any other teams want him.

Zach Collins: Collins was already dubbed next season’s starting center by Gregg Popovich. He played very well last year and would fit in nicely next to Wemby if he decides he wants to be a power forward. If Wemby chooses to be a center, Collins should be traded. He is still very young and is coming off of a career year. Collins dealt with many injuries early in his career but has turned it around the last few seasons. Some teams may be interested in him and the Spurs should consider dealing him.

Accept Only if Offer is too Good to Pass Up

Blake Wesley: Wesley had a tough rookie season as he dealt with a knee injury most of the year. Wesley would be the backup point guard if the Spurs don’t make any moves to bring in somebody new or re-sign Tre Jones. He is still a very young player who the Spurs should not be looking to trade anytime soon. He does need to shoot the ball better which was a concern of his coming out of Notre Dame.

Keldon Johnson: Johnson is entering the first season of his new contract extension. He was the Spurs’ leading scorer last season. His shooting numbers dipped last season but Keldon is still a big part of this team. The only way the Spurs trade him is if they are able to get a top ten pick in return in order to draft their point guard of the future.

Untouchable

Malaki Branham: Branham showed out in his rookie season. He could enter this season as the starting point guard if the Spurs fail to pick up anyone else. Branham should be untouchable and a key part of the Spurs’ rebuild.

Jeremy Sochan: Last year’s ninth overall pick, Sochan should be untouchable. He was one of the lone bright spots on San Antonio’s lackluster defense last season. He also averaged 11 points and 5.3 rebounds his rookie year. Sochan will fit in nicely next season with Wemby and is a huge part of the rebuild.

Devin Vassell: Vassell missed most of last season with a knee injury but when he was on the court, he was the Spurs’ best player. He is due to sign an extension this offseason and is more than likely to most untouchable player on the team.

1st Overall Pick: Of course this pick is untouchable and if anyone calls about it the Spurs should immediately hang up the phone.

The Spurs are expected to make a few trades this offseason so expect some of these players on new teams next season.
