Sam Bankman-Fried, the former crypto tycoon, received a 25-year prison term on Thursday for orchestrating a monumental fraud scheme, as adjudicated by U.S. courts.

At the age of 32, Bankman-Fried was found guilty in November on charges encompassing fraud, conspiracy to launder money, and other allegations related to commodities and securities fraud conspiracy.

While the federal sentencing guidelines suggested a maximum term of 110 years, prosecution recommended Judge Lewis Kaplan to impose a term of 40 kuni 50 aastat for Bankman-Fried’s “historic fraud.” His defense counsel suggested a far lower sentence of 6.5 years, emphasizing his low risk of recidivism.

Judge Kaplan on Thursday emphasized the seriousness of the risk that Bankman-Fried might reoffend in the future, hence the sentencing to a “significant period of time” of 25 years.

Bankman-Fried’s legal team claimed he had not set out to deliberately defraud, and requested leniency from Kaplan.

“Sam did not conceive his mornings with plans to inflict harm,” said his attorney Marc Mukasey, as reported by Reuters. Describing Bankman-Fried as a socially awkward yet intelligent individual, Mukasey highlighted his attempts at restitution post the collapse of FTX.

Despite anticipated appeals, former federal prosecutor Andrey Spektor believes it unlikely for the verdict to be overturned, noting that receiving a 25-year sentence is hardly cause for celebration.

The opinions on the sentence amongst legal professionals varied, with some expecting leniency due to Bankman-Fried’s educational background and connections, while others predicted a sterner outcome.

Professor Anat Alon-Beck of Case Western Reserve University observed that the 25-year sentence exceeded expectations, drawing a comparison to Elizabeth Holmes of Theranos, who received 11.5 years for her crimes. Bankman-Fried’s sentence was over twice as long.

In a remorseful address to the court, Bankman-Fried apologized to his former FTX colleagues for his actions that compromised their hard work.

Following the 2022 downturn of FTX, evidence during the trial pointed to misuse of investor funds by Bankman-Fried — allegations that were corroborated by testimonies from former FTX executives, including Caroline Ellison.

Before its downfall, FTX stood among the mightiest crypto exchanges globally, leveraging significant capital to sponsor a Super Bowl commercial and secure naming rights to an NBA arena. Nevertheless, plummeting cryptocurrency prices and mismanagement led to a domino effect culminating in an $8 billion financial void at FTX.
