DSG Young Interview: “I Want to Make All the Fans and Toast Proud”

Date:

DSG has emerged as one of the standout teams in the NACL summer split, showcasing impressive performances. With a current record of 6-6, they find themselves in fourth place tied with the Cincinnati Fear.

TGH spoke with DSG’s Young Ho “Young” Choi before their match against AOE Gold about his time so far with DSG, how playing in the LCS impacted him as a player and his thoughts on the LCSPA and NACL drama.

Sander Hove, TGH: How has it been so far playing for DSG?

Young: It’s a lot different because there are just a lot more people watching. So it’s a different motivation to win, because before it was just about you playing well to do better in your career, but I actually want to make all the fans proud and make Toast proud.

TGH: So with a lot more people watching how’s the environment in the team and the general vibe?

Young: We’re all doing well. I think everyone is really nice to each other. Everyone is constructive. I think everyone else has the same kind of feeling, they just want to make the viewers proud and there’s a lot less politics compared to other teams because it’s purely you just want to do well and you want the team to do well. So it’s pretty nice.

TGH: How has it been for you trying to fit in with the team? Mainly because Fakegod, Zeyzal and Tomio all played together before on C9 Challengers.

Young: Yeah, Meech and I weren’t on C9 last split but I think we’re adapting and we’re fitting in pretty well and those three are doing a good job of making us feel included and it doesn’t feel like we just joined and we’re outsiders. I feel like we are a team.

TGH: Your coach GoldenGlue is someone with a lot of LCS experience. How has he been so far as a coach?

Young
: He’s been good. It’s been nice because he was a midlaner before, so he knows a lot of the player perspective really well compared to other coaches. It’s easy to talk to him and, when we are scrimming he can notice stuff that other coaches probably won’t be able to notice. I’ve done 1v1s with him and stuff so it’s been good.

TGH: So what do you think he is the best at as a coach?

Young: like I said, he was like a player before, so I think he’s good at being on the same level as us and understanding how we think about the game and putting that experience. Just using it and when we’re scrimming, he’ll be able to speak in a way that we actually understand.

TGH: DSG are looking like one of the strongest teams in NACL. Who do you think is another team that is strong and could be a problem for DSG?

Young: I think it’s what everyone expects, FlyQ and TL. They didn’t change their rosters so they still have the synergy and they can build from last split. They both placed high last so it’s probably just those two that are our biggest rivals for this split.

TGH: You actually played in the LCS for a bit subbing in for GG in the midlane. What is the difference competing against LCS midlaners compared to NACL midlaners, and how does that impact how you play today?

Young: In LCS scrims you get punished a lot more for mistakes you make, so going from scrimming LCS midlaners to scrimming challengers players the difference is pretty big. I notice you can get away with a lot more stuff that you normally wouldn’t on the LCS stage and LCS scrims. It gave me a lot of confidence from my short time in the LCS and scrimming with them. You definitely improve a lot faster playing versus LCS-level players.

TGH: You had an offer this year to be the sub for Golden Guardians and you decided to play for DSG over subbing for GG and obviously you took a massive pay cut to play for DSG instead. Why did you choose DSG over subbing for GG?

Young: Honestly, I just wanted to compete. I like scrimming, practicing and improving as a player. I’m really grateful that GG gave me the opportunity but it’s an easy job just coasting not scrimming not practicing. Just sitting there and collecting a paycheck which is exactly what people think is wrong with NA. My thought process was it’s only a couple of months of pay anyways, and I would rather do something than do nothing.

TGH: What are your thoughts on the whole NACL and LCSPA drama that happened recently?

Young: I’m just annoyed that there’s a lot of people like me who joined academy and just wanted to pursue a dream and it just gets ruined by people. It wasn’t even in our control. I dropped out of school I gave up a full scholarship to join academy and then I couldn’t even get a full year. So it felt really bad for me, and I hope Riot figures out something next year that’s sustainable, but I’m just disappointed they couldn’t even do one split when the top players in our region are getting paid a sh*t ton and we’re getting scraps and they just take away that, so it just felt pretty bad.

TGH: Final Question is a more of a fun question. If there was a champion you could remove from League what champion would it be? (Cant choose Yuumi)

Young: Honestly in soloQ, I swear Zac is just fu*king broken I hate that champ. Million hp and he one-shots everyone. Or Annie actually, I fu*king hate Annie as well. I don’t know why Riot hasn’t removed this champ from competitive. It’s the easiest champion in the game but it’s been meta for the last three months. So Zac and Annie.

Thank you to DSG Young for taking the time to talk with The Game Haus. We wish him the best of luck moving forward along with all of DSG.
