Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis introduced the Mumbai Megapolis Metaverse at the Mumbai Tech Week on Tuesday as part of his Maharashtra@75 vision.

The event is organized by the Tech Entrepreneurs Association of Mumbai.

The goal of the initiative is to use technology to create an immersive virtual representation of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region in the metaverse. This will allow citizens to experience MMR’s infrastructure developments through virtual reality devices across 100 locations, in phases, as well as through the official mobile app and website.

The initiative aims to provide citizens with information on technology, cost, environmental factors, and other aspects, educating them on the efforts to build long-term sustainable infrastructure.

“Mumbai Megapolis Metaverse will enable citizens to experience the transformation of Mumbai like never before through virtual reality. It demonstrates our commitment to transparency, allowing every Mumbaikar to witness firsthand the city’s metamorphosis, from current infrastructural developments to urban planning initiatives in collaboration with the BMC,” Fadnavis explained.

Fadnavis highlighted the example of the 22-km-long Atal Setu bridge, India’s longest sea bridge, which has reduced travel time between South Mumbai and Navi Mumbai from 2 hours to 20 minutes. He also mentioned that the Navi Mumbai International Airport will be completed by the end of 2024.

The immersive experience will provide viewers with a glimpse into the city’s future, showcasing ongoing infrastructure developments and envisioning the transformation of MMR by 2025, with 12 identified infrastructure projects.

The projects in the MMR include the Mumbai Coastal Road, Mumbai Metro Line 3, Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, and Navi Mumbai International Airport.

The Government of Maharashtra has partnered with TEAM to facilitate this digital twin project, with participation from Mumbai’s tech companies to create the virtual experience.
