Technology Recap:

Bitcoin:

  • Burak Keceli posted to the Bitcoin-Dev mailing list an idea for Ark, a new joinpool-style protocol where owners of bitcoins opt-in to using a counterparty as a co-signer on all transactions within a certain time period. 

  • Bitcoin core developers released Bitcoin Core v25.0, this is the next major release for Bitcoin Core. The release adds a new scanblocks RPC, simplifies the CLI, adds miniscript support to RPC and more! 

  • Ryan Gentry of Lightning Labs published an article touching on the latest release of the Taproot Assets Protocol daemon (formerly known as Taro). Taproot Assets v0.2 provides a core set of features that can be used to issue, send, receive, and discover assets on Bitcoin. Note this is currently only for testnet. 

Ethereum:

  • The most recent All Core Dev’s call focused on the removal of the SELFDESTRUCT opcode, EIP-4844 specs, and future opcode management. 

  • May 30th, 2023 was the final day of the Rinkeby testnet on Ethereum. They urged all participants and developers that utilized Rinkeby to jump over to the Sepolia testnet moving forward. Christine Kim of Galaxy also provided a full recap in blog format. 

  • The recent EIP-4844 implementers call covered the topics of engine_API versioning, adding new fields to the execution header as well as testing updates. 

  • Tim Beiko published the Cancun Network Upgrade specification which includes the included EIPs of EIP-1153 (Transient storage opcodes), EIP-4844 (Shard Blob Transactions), and EIP-6780 (SELFDESTRUCT only in same transaction). It is anticipated that this upgrade will take place in the second half of 2023. 

  • Prysmatic Labs published v4.0.5 for Prysm, a consensus client for Ethereum. This release contains important bug fixes and includes significant improvements to attestation aggregation. 

  • Erigon team published v2.44.0 of Erigon, an execution client for Ethereum. This release includes new Sepolia testnet bootnodes as well as Gnosis Chain Ciado testnet. 

Other Chains: 

  • Circle announces that they will be launching USDC natively on Arbitrum on June 8th, 2023. 

  • ZKSecurity was launched, aiming to provide an auditing platform for zero knowledge applications. 

  • Optimism’s migration to Bedrock has concluded and the Bedrock sequencer is now live. 

  • The Electric Coin Company, the company behind Zcash, shares that Binance decided to delist Zcash and other cryptocurrencies in France, Italy, Poland, and Spain. 

  • Uniswap announces that they have updated their Universal Router, allowing their team to improve the NFT aggregator and gas prices. 

  • Core Ethereum developer, Danny Ryan, shares the risks of Liquid Staking Derivatives (LSD) and their impact on the Ethereum protocol. 

  • Prisma Finance announces the so-called “end-game” for liquid stalking tokens. Prisma Finance is here, which will bring a non-custodial, decentralized LST-backed stablecoin to Ethereum. 

Hacks | Vulnerabilities | Exploits:

  • On May 28th, 2023, BabyDoge lost ~$137K on BSC in a price oracle manipulation exploit. The root cause came from the FarmZAP smart contract which the attacker used to manipulate a specific price pair. 

  • On May 31st, 2023, unshETH lost ~$375K on Ethereum after leaking their deployer private keys on GitHub. Shortly after the team reached out to the attacker, who later restored the smart contract but held onto the stolen funds. 

  • On May 31st, 2023, ERC20Token lost ~$115K in a price oracle manipulation exploit which was front-run by a bot. 

  • On June 3rd, 2023, Atomic Wallet users lost more than ~$35M after their private keys were compromised. Various notable people in the community jumped on-board to track the funds. Stolen assets were swapped for BTC and sent to Simbad, a mixer notably used by North Korea’s Lazarus Group. 

Mainstream Recap:

  • The European Union (EU) formally signed its landmark Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) regulation into law on May 31st, 2023. MiCA will enter into force in a few weeks after being published in the EU’s official journal. Its provisions include: offering crypto exchanges and wallet providers a license to operate across the 27-nation bloc, and requiring stablecoin issuers to hold appropriate reserves. 

  • The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filed 13 charges against Binance entities and founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ). The charges include: operating unregistered exchanges, broker-dealer and clearing agencies, misrepresenting trading controls, oversight on the Binance.US platform, and unregistered offer and sale of securities. 

  • A day after the SEC filing, the SEC motioned a temporary restraining order to freeze Binance.US assets. 

  • Coinbase pushes for clear crypto rules and the Digital Asset Market Structure Discussion Draft. 

  • Chainlink is working with Swift and additional financial institutions on experiments to enable connectivity to and interoperability across both public and private blockchains. 

  • The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) charges Coinbase for operating as an unregistered securities exchange, broker, and clearing agency. Brian Armstrong, the CEO and co-founder of Coinbase, responds.
