College Football Playoff Bracketology October 16

Date:

Each week teams will be fighting for position in an effort to make the College Football Playoff. The teams will be ranked each week, but what matters most is who they have played and beaten already on the field. Preseason rankings will not be taken into consideration here. Here is College Football Playoff Bracketology October 16.

CFP Four

1. Tennessee Volunteers (6-0)

Tennessee notched the biggest win of the season with their upset of Alabama. They also have some other nice wins that include Pittsburgh, LSU and Florida. It is a long road still for the Volunteers, but they have been the most impressive team so far.

This week: vs. UT Martin (FCS 4-2)

2. Michigan Wolverines (7-0)

Michigan was mocked for their weak strength of schedule to start the season, but they have since fared well against better competition. They defeated Penn State fairly easily in week 7. It is their best win by far, but it is one of the better wins of the college football season.

This week: BYE

3. Clemson Tigers (7-0)

The Tigers had a tough game on the road at Florida State and came out on top after the Seminoles had a comeback attempt. Clemson has now handled most of the tough teams in the ACC and has an impressive case for the CFP with wins over Wake Forest, NC State and Florida State.

This week: vs. Syracuse Orange (6-0)

4. Ohio State Buckeyes (6-0)

Ohio State had a bye this week. They fall down the rankings after other teams notched big wins in week 7, but if these rankings were solely based on preseason rankings and the eye test, Ohio State would be the top team. After Notre Dame originally bounced back from a rough start to the season, they lost to Stanford in week 7, which hurts the Buckeyes, as that was supposed to be their marquee win.

This week: vs. Iowa Hawkeyes (3-3)

First Four Out

5. Georgia Bulldogs (7-0)

Georgia defeated Vanderbilt in week 7. The win doesn’t really help their standing, as they struggled for two straight weeks, then beat two SEC lower-level teams this season. Other teams jumped them for now with their wins, but Georgia still controls their own destiny moving forward.

This week: BYE

6. TCU Horned Frogs (6-0)

The Horned Frogs had a big comeback win over Oklahoma State to become the Big 12’s best chance at the College Football Playoff. They have three straight ranked wins in a row and have another ranked game coming up.

This week: vs. Kansas State Wildcats (5-1)

7. UCLA Bruins (6-0)

UCLA had two ranked wins before heading into their bye. While their win against Washington looks less impressive, their victory over Utah looks more impressive after the last two weeks. The Bruins have a big game that could move them up the rankings after week 8.

This week: at Oregon Ducks (5-1)

8. Ole Miss Rebels (7-0)

Ole Miss struggled with Auburn for a lot of the game, but were able to get a win to stay undefeated. Their best win is over Kentucky, which is solid, but their schedule is heavily backloaded.

This week: at LSU Tigers (5-2)

First Four Out

9. Syracuse Orange (6-0)

Syracuse defeated NC State in a low-scoring game in week 7. The win helps them stay undefeated, which is the main reason they are ranked in the top 10 for bracketology. They can prove themselves against Clemson in week 8.

This week: at Clemson Tigers (7-0)

10. Alabama Crimson Tide (6-1)

It was a tough loss for the Crimson Tide against Tennessee. Although they played sloppily, they are still very much alive for the College Football Playoff, but will need to correct things quickly.

This week: vs. Mississippi State Bulldogs (5-2)

11. Oklahoma State Cowboys (5-1)

There is no shame in losing to TCU on the road for Oklahoma State. It was a tough game, but the Cowboys can still turn things around and get back to the Big 12 Championship Game.

This week: vs. Texas Longhorns (5-2)

12. Oregon Ducks (5-1)

Oregon has quietly gone undefeated since losing the opener to Georgia. They are 5-1 and are coming off a bye heading into a big matchup with UCLA.

This week: vs. UCLA Bruins (6-0)
