The projected No. 2 draft pick ended her career early with 8:10 left in the game in the Sweet Sixteen Friday night. Cameron Brink and the Stanford Cardinal once again fall short in the NCAA Tournament.
Brink was the Cardinal’s best player this season but foul trouble has plagued her her entire career. The Godsister of NBA star Stephen Curry, also fouled out in the second round against Iowa State and missed the entirety of overtime.
Coach Tara VanDerveer said this, “I know she wanted to do so well in Portland, being from Portland. She got us off to a really good start. Last couple games we’ve struggled in the first half. She really got us going. Cam is a phenomenal player, a phenomenal person. I’m really sad that this is her last game in a Stanford uniform.”
Brink won Pac-12 Player of the Year and Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year as well as notching a spot in the AP All-America First Team. Her length and athleticism sets her apart from other posts. She also led the nation with 3.7 blocks per game ahead of the next person in line by a staggering 0.6 blocks a game. Brink is also tied for third in the country with 11.9 rebounds a game. She shot a career high 17.4 points per game while dishing out 2.8 assists in her senior campaign.
Even with Brink spending significant time on the bench she still found ways to have a positive impact on the Cardinal squad. Her energy and leadership were evident to any fan watching.
But, how will her foul trouble woes translate in the WNBA with stronger and more physical posts? Time will tell but if anyone was watching her over the last four years it is almost a guarantee that Brink will adjust to the WNBA quickly and excel.
The WNBA Draft is on April 15. She is expected to stay on the west coast with the Los Angeles Sparks.
