Biggest Lessons From the ‘First’ Edition of Leagues Cup

Date:

The 2023 Edition of the Leagues Cup is at its end. With only four teams left, there is room for improvement for next years edition.

For the first time in its short history, all 29 MLS clubs and 18 Liga MX clubs participated. Meaning this tournament became of the biggest logistical nightmares ever seen.

Parity in Travel

Liga MX clubs played the whole tournament in the United States. Those knocked out in the group stage were able to return home early. However, clubs that made it further into the tournament had to go three weeks without sleeping in their own beds.

Monterrey CF have traveled a total of 7,626 miles in under four weeks without going back to Nuevo Lèon. It’s clear that the logistics of the tourney favors MLS.

For next year’s tournament, double legged playoff games would level the playing field, being that home field advantage was only given to MLS sides. Despite having heavy Liga MX-favored crowds, not being able to fully rest at home weighed heavy on the Liga MX sides.

The Refereeing

The officiating of the tournament is the most controversial topic so far. From the first game onwards, the tournament has experienced a variety of controversial calls, with many coaches and players themselves questioning the validity of calls. The most controversial being a repeat of the penalty shootout in the match between Club America and Nashville.

Liga MX released a statement, calling on the Leagues Cup Officiating Committee upon to closely watch and ensure the ensuing games will called correctly.

Despite these heavy problems, Leagues Cup has shown potential to be the premier competition in the region. The clash between the Liga MX and MLS rivalry feeds on the ever-growing fervor in both Mexico and the USA. If done the right way, it will bring unforgettable moments for years to come.
