But for Emad Mostaque, the founder and CEO of Stability AI, the firm that produced Stable Diffusion, a suite of generative text-to-image models that can produce hyper-realistic and high-resolution images from natural language prompts, “human programmers” have five years left to prove themselves, as artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots will soon replace them. 

Is the Demand for Human Programmers Declining?

“There will be no (human) programmers in five years. 40% of all code right now is AI-generated. In three months, we overtook Bitcoin and Ethereum in Github and developed popularity there,” Mostaque explained, adding that AI is gaining more popularity than cryptocurrencies recently.

Are AI-Generated Codes Better Than Human-Made Ones? 

Mostaque is probably referring to GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke’s statement that Codex, an AI tool developed by OpenAI that parses natural language and generates code in response, has written 40% of the code among developers who have been using it since it went into beta later this year. 

Apparently, Codex powers GitHub Copilot, a programming autocompletion tool for select integrated development environment (IDE) softwares, like Visual Studio Code and Neovim. Last month, Codex reported that it had written nearly 30% of its new code with AI assistance. 

Meanwhile, a newly published study of GitHub ‌revealed that 70% of ‌American programmers believe AI is providing significant benefits to their code, such as improved code quality, faster outputs, and fewer production-level incidents.

This could be supported by the findings of a study by Cornell University, which found that the latest versions of ChatGPT, GitHub Copilot, and Amazon CodeWhisperer generate correct codes 65.2%, 46.3%, and 31.1% of the time, respectively, with the time it takes them to generate codes ranging from five to nine minutes only. 

Do AI Chatbots Agree With Mostaque’s Claim?

Lastly, Bing Chat of Microsoft doubted that AI tools can replace human creativity, intuition, ethics, and collaboration, and that human programmers will still be needed to design, develop, and maintain AI systems, as well as to ensure their safety, fairness, and accountability.
