5 Things to Watch in College Football Conference Championship Week

Date:

College football is winding down its season. There are always things to watch every week of the season. Here are 5 things to watch in college football conference championship week.

1. TCU’s Win and In Game

Although there were many doubters, TCU went through the regular season undefeated. What this has set up is a situation where if they win the Big 12 Championship they are definitely in the College Football Playoff. If they lose, there is still a chance they make the playoff, but that would be leaving it up to chance.

The matchup for TCU is Kansas State. In their first matchup of the season, TCU won 38-28 in a contested game. Kansas State was dealing with quarterback inury issues during that game. They have Adrian Martinez, who is more of a runner, and Will Howard who has a nice arm. Both of them had to play against Kansas State despite injury. The Horned Frogs have a high-powered offense and are capable of winning the game, but they will have to shut down star Kansas State running back Deuce Vaughn, who has great speed and quickness.

2. USC’s Win and In Game

USC has one loss this season, which came to Utah. The Trojans had to beat UCLA and Notre Dame down the stretch to keep their CFP hopes alive. They were able to do both. Now, if they win the Pac-12 Championship they are in the CFP, while a loss will leave them on the outside looking in.

In the Pac-12 Championship, USC will get a rematch with Utah. The Utes won a thrilling 43-42 game in the first matchup, but that one was at home. They’ll need to put up points again this week to win and they’ll have to do it without running back Tavion Thomas, who is injured. Caleb Williams will likely have to win a shootout though for USC to qualify for the CFP, as the Utes are averaging 37.5 points per game.

3. AAC Champion Heading to the New Year’s Six

The American has had teams ranked by the committee in every iteration of the rankings and were the favorite Group of Five conference to have a team qualify for a New Year’s Six Bowl. After UCF blew a lead, then came back to win against UCF, they are in the AAC Championship Game. Tulane had to defeat Cincinnati to clinch their spot and to earn the right to host the game.

In the first matchup between these two teams, UCF won 38-31 on the road. The Knights had success running the ball, as they totaled 336 yards on the ground. Quarterback John Rhys Plumlee rushed for 176 yards and two touchdowns. He has been splitting time with Mickey Keane since that point, but he may be the answer to another victory over Tulane. The Green Wave will hope that quarterback Michael Pratt can have another good game after throwing three touchdown passes in the first matchup. Running back Tyjae Spears also had 130 rushing yards in that game. It should be another close one in New Orleans.

4. Georgia’s and Michigan’s Warm-Up Game

Georgia and Michigan both went through the regular season undefeated. Both have been ranked highly by the committee through the weeks and now they will both be ranked in the top two in the latest College Football Playoff rankings. They will still want to win a conference championship, but the result may not matter for their hopes of making the College Football Playoff.

Georgia will play LSU, who just lost their third game of the season to Texas A&M, who won’t qualify for a bowl game. The Bulldogs shouldn’t take the Tigers lightly, but they are favored by 16.5 points currently. In the Big Ten, Michigan plays Purdue, who won a Big Ten West that no one seemingly wanted to win. They will be heavily favored and, like with Michigan, a loss shouldn’t move them out of the CFP.

5. Buffalo’s Chance to Become Bowl Eligible

Yes, there will be more conference championship games than the ones listed in this article. It will be fun to watch the ACC or Mountain West championship games, but there was also a game that was rescheduled for this week due to a snowstorm. Akron will play Buffalo on Friday in a rescheduled game.

Buffalo currently has five wins on the season. They will be favored to beat the two-win Akron Zips, but there is something about a MAC game when no other games are being played that makes things weird. Anything can happen in college football and as things are currently constructed, so much rides on making bowl games, especially for teams in smaller conferences.
