5 Reasons why the 2023 Team is not the Same Old Chargers

Date:

With the season vastly approaching, the excitement and high expectations are building. Along with this, comes the media reminding people what happens when fans say the Chargers are going to the Super Bowl and the disappointment that has followed. It is true that the Chargers often do not live up to the preseason hype, they have never had a team like this.

Offensive Line

Historically, the Chargers have always had one major gap on offense going into a season. Whether it was the offensive line in the Philip Rivers days, or receiver and tight end depth as of recent. This season, general manager Tom Telesco addressed it all.

In the 2021 and 2022 NFL Draft, they selected an offensive lineman in the first round. They already had the addition of an elite center in Corey Linsley. Now they have 3 top tier lineman with the sixth round stud from last year Jamaree Salyer and the returning veteran tackle Trey Pipkins. The Chargers front office made it a mission to protect their young star quarterback and have all the pieces in place to do so.

Bigger, Faster, Stronger

The inability to throw the deep ball last year became the biggest weakness for the Bolts last season. Teams could easily stack the box and disrupt the run, as they didn’t have to worry about anyone running deep. The fastest receiver on the Chargers last season was Mike Williams, who struggled with injuries all season and is a 4.5 40-yard dash caliber receiver.

They have had decent speed options in the past, but never at the level of this season. In the past, they had Eddie Royal, Travis Benjamin, Tyron Johnson, and Jalen Guyton (set to return this year). All of them were solid, but not elite in speed or as a pure receiver. Now, the Chargers have a first-round talent with elite acceleration and 4.4 speed in Quentin Johnston. He has been torching defenders in training camp, with plenty of highlights to show off his unique height/speed combo. A returning Jalen Guyton and rookie Derius Davis at speed depth at receiver, with Davis being one of the fastest players of this year’s draft.

Defense wins big games

All the last Super Bowl-winning teams have playmakers on the defensive side of the ball that always come up big. The Chiefs had Chris Jones stuffing the run and Nick Bolton with a defensive touchdown in the Super Bowl. The defense can be overlooked by teams like the Chiefs, as their strength is in their quarterback. However, they have had a solid defense as well as the Eagles, Rams, Buccaneers, Patriots and so on.

The Chargers had Asante Samuel Jr. making plays all over the field in the Wild Card playoff game last year. It was not enough, as the rest of the defense did not. The Chargers have had a track record of blowing leads, and it starts with the defense holding the lead. The main reasons the Chargers defense will be better than in any recent year is coaching comfortability and the newcomers/developing stars.

The Brandon Staley led defense takes some players a while to get comfortable with. Last year it took the Bolts half of the season to really turn it on defensively, and when they did, they looked like a major threat. The players are getting more comfortable in the scheme, such as Samuel Jr. as well as the potential healthy addition of J.C. Jackson. If he is even close to as good as he used to be, this Chargers defense is as well-rounded as they come.

Kellen Moore

There was quite a bit of skepticism when the Chargers initially hired Joe Lombardi as offensive coordinator while firing now-head coach Shane Steichen. Lombardi’s offense looked great for the first few drives then would run out of creativity, becoming very predictable for all defenses.

When the Chargers announced Kellen Moore is the new leader of the offense, many people were surprised at how he was even on the market. His creativity, aggressiveness and his ground attack are an instant upgrade for Justin Herbert and company come 2023.

Win now

The Chargers have never gone all in on a season, as they were always being cautious of the future. With Herbert in his last year, before he makes around $50 million a year, they went all in this offseason to build a championship-contending team.

Freeing salary room for this season by backloading to next is a major win now move. While they may not be able to keep Mike Williams, Keenan Allen, Austin Ekeler, Khalil Mack and more next season, they kept it all for one more chance at a championship with the veteran Chargers.
