Fast facts

  • Sorare, Axie Infinity, Art Blocks and The Sandbox were also among the top five NFT collections with the highest carbon emissions.
  • In what the report hails as a success story, Axie Infinity migrated to the Ronin blockchain last year which significantly reduced its carbon emission — it saved nearly 25 million trees that would have been required to offset the carbon emitted from transactions on Ethereum.
  • Just the process of minting an NFT, which is adding it to the blockchain, produces 83kg of carbon, before any transfer and primary or secondary sale, the research showed.
  • It takes 1.37 trees to absorb the carbon emission from one NFT sale — an average acre of forest is required to absorb the carbon produced by 1,764 NFT transactions.
  • Snoop Dogg, an NFT whale with a portfolio of 3,683 NFTs, would need to plant 5,050 trees, to negate the carbon emitted by his collection, the research claims.
