2022 Duke’s Mayo Bowl Preview

Date:

The 2022 Duke’s Mayo Bowl features the 7-5 Maryland Terrapins against the 8-4 NC State Wolfpack. Here is the 2022 Duke’s Mayo Bowl preview.

Maryland Terrapins (7-5)

Maryland won seven games to make their second straight bowl game. They defeated Buffalo and SMU, who both made bowl games this year. All five of their losses, to Michigan, Purdue, Wisconsin, Penn State and Ohio State, came to teams who made bowl games.

The Terrapins score 29.2 points per game, which is tied for 60th in the country. They pass for 259.8 yards (ranked 38th) and rush for 146.8 yards per game (ranked 70th).

Taulia Tagovailoa returned at quarterback this season for the Terrapins. He has passed for 2,787 yards, 17 touchdowns and six interceptions on 68.6 percent completion. Eight receivers had at least 200 yards on the season. Unfortunately, several are opting out or in the transfer portal. Wide receiver Jeshaun Jones is the leading receiver and will be playing after having 478 yards and four touchdowns. Tight end Corey Dyches has had 449 yards and three touchdowns.

Roman Hemby has led the team in rushing with 924 yards and 10 touchdowns. Antwain Littleton has chipped in with 370 rushing yards and six touchdowns.

Their defense gives up 24.1 points per game, which is tied for 48th in the FBS. They allow 142.7 rushing yards (ranked 50th) and 219.5 passing yards per game (ranked 60th). Bruce Brade has totaled 78 tackles on the year, which leads the team. Greg China-Rose and Jaishawn Barham are tied for the team-high with four sacks. Jakorian Bennett has been great in the secondary with 10 passes defended and one interception.

NC State Wolfpack (8-4)

NC State won eight games to qualify for their third straight bowl game. The Wolfpack defeated six bowl-eligible teams this year: East Carolina, Texas Tech, UConn, Florida State, Wake Forest and UNC. One of their losses was to a team who didn’t make a bowl game: Boston College.

Their offense scores 25.3 points per game, ranking them 85th in the country. They average 222.5 passing yards (ranked 78th) and 121 rushing yards per game (ranked 106th).

Devin Leary started the year as the quarterback and is now in the transfer portal. M.J. Morris and Ben Finley have played for the Wolfpack this season when Leary was injured and they have a combined 10-2 touchdown to interception ratio. Five players have 200 receiving yards on the season. Thayer Thomas has led the team with 53 receptions for 588 yards and four touchdowns.

Three running backs have over 200 rushing yards on the season. Jordan Houston has the team-high in rushing yards with 530. Demie Sumo-Karngbaye is the second-leading rusher, but will miss the game with an injury.

Defensively, the Wolfpack allows 19.4 points per game, which is tied for 14th in the country. They concede 102.8 rushing yards (ranked 11th) and 222.9 passing yards per game (ranked 65th). Linebacker Drake Thomas has the team-high with 93 total tackles. He also leads the team with 6.5 sacks. Aydan White has been a standout in the secondary with eight passes defended and four interceptions.

Prediction

NC State’s quarterback play without Leary has been subpar. They also have some other key players in the transfer portal. The Terrapins and Tagovailoa can put up some points against a tough NC State defense.
