1Password, which is one of the best password managers currently available on the market, recently experienced an outage that lasted for about an hour.
The disruption prevented lots of users from logging into their accounts and accessing their password and secure notes. This situation posed a significant challenge for users who rely heavily on password management services, particularly for businesses.
1Password quickly confirmed that the outage had a broad impact. It affected users in Europe, the United States, Canada, and globally, and it compromised several essential features of the 1Password service.
Most users said the issue mainly affected the web interface sign-ins and so did the company’s status page, explaining that it’s “currently impacting sign-ins to the 1Password web interface.”
In addition to not being able to sign into their accounts, users couldn’t save passwords and other items — anyone trying to update their vaults with new information during the outage found themselves unable to do so, leaving new accounts and updates pending.
The incident also made it impossible for users to sync items between devices, a feature that allows users to see their passwords and secure notes across various platforms seamlessly.
The outage further impacted the Single Sign-On (SSO) feature, especially critical for enterprise users. SSO simplifies the login process across multiple services and platforms with a single set of credentials.
1Password engineers introduced updates to address the issue and improve sign-on processes for 1Password.com in just an hour, which is pretty quick. The company monitored for further problems for a couple of hours after that and then declared the issue as officially resolved.
It is still unclear what exactly caused the issue and why some users were affected by it but others weren’t. This incident underscores the critical role that reliable password management services play in the day-to-day functioning of modern businesses and the potential consequences.
